    Chapter One

    Ishmael Meets Mordecai

It was a hot summer day as I entered my office, attempting to come up with a story that would somehow put a smile on my editor Mr. Edsel’s face. I have never heard anyone call Mr. Edsel anything other than Mr. Edsel. As a matter of fact, neither I nor anyone else, ever knew if Mr. Edsel had a first name. It’s not on his office door window, nor is it on his business card that I happened to notice one day. It was midafternoon and the other so-called news gatherers were looking busy, but none, to my knowledge, had anything regarding hot news on their desk or in their heads. Usually, when he wants someone, he just yells out, Hey you and naturally all of us look at one another and ask Me?

I soon arrive at Mr. Edsel’s door, knock on his window ever so lightly, and he waves for me to come on in. I open the door and get beyond it and what he says is highly unusual, Shut the door, Ishmael. Sit, he says. I sit and he chews on his cigar as if he is going to eat it, and all I can imagine is that it must taste absolutely horrible. One would, however, never know because Mr. Edsel never smiles or frowns. He just looks as if he is going
