    Lovey, heads up! Luke cried but the warning came too late. The volleyball rushed toward her and even a spike out of the question by the time she realized it was on her. The ball fell harmlessly to the ground as the other team cheered for the point.

    Dunner uns Gewidder, she mumbled, shaking her blonde braid in disgust. I should have had that!

    Language! Luke laughed, embarrassment coloring his cheeks at the words. It is only a game, Lovey. You take it so seriously.

    Isn’t everything about this place serious? Lovina muttered sullenly. What is the point if not to win?

    Luke cast her a wary look, sensing her irate mood.

    What has gotten into you lately? Luke demanded, folding his arms over his chest.

    As if you don’t know, she thought but she didn’t speak the words aloud. That wasn’t the time or place for such a conversation.

    Nix, she sighed. Get back in your position. Who’s serving?

    Bring back old memories? Jason asked in a slightly mocking tone and jarring her back into the vehicle. Lovina pulled her eyes away from the schoolyard and grimaced slightly.

    A little too many old memories, she replied shortly, dropping an aloof mask over her face.

    One of these days, you’re going to have to run me through a day in the Amish life.

    And one of these days, you’ll have to run me through a day in the life of an entitled son, she shot back with more anger than she had intended. Jason’s dark eyes shadowed to a near black and his hands tightened around the steering wheel but to Lovina’s relief, he stopped talking for the moment.

    That wasn’t very nice, she chided herself, stifling a sigh. He wasn’t being a total jerk.
