Greta had lost herself in the plot of the book once again, barely noticing the sound of footfalls in the hallway outside her door until it was too late. Suddenly, she was staring at her mother, guilt flooding her face Greta hastily stuffed the verboden book underneath her sheets but Anna Bontrager did not seem to notice her daughter’s shame.

Greta, I have terrible news, Anna sighed. "Kum. The family has gathered downstairs."

Greta blinked several time, a feeling of dread replacing her guilt as she slipped off her bed and smoothed out her nightgown.

At this hour? she murmured aloud but she wasn’t expecting an answer. It could only be bad news if there were visitors at that time.

Anna had already retreated from her room and Greta quickly changed into a work dress, unsure of who waited downstairs.

Her long, blonde hair was unbraided, spilling over the slender form of her shoulders, strands falling over the light blue of her eyes but Greta hardly noticed as she wracked her mind to think what could have happened.

When her foot stepped off the last step and onto the landing, the front door opened and Eliza entered, her face swollen with tears.

"Mein Gotte, Eliza. What has happened? Greta breathed. Are you all right?"

Her sister shook her own dishevelled blonde mane and met Greta’s eyes, pain illuminating them to an almost palpable level.

Greta reached for her sister’s hands, noting the quiet voices emanating from the front room where others had gathered.

"Kumme, tell me, Greta urged, pulling her sister aside and away from the others. Is it Jonah?"

Miserably, Eliza nodded, fresh tears pooling in her eyes.

There was an accident, Eliza breathed.
