About this ebook

I've written this book by drawing on my own experiences of the heart wrenching emotions that follow the death of a beloved dog.

I've lost four dogs and grieved for each one. I still grieve for each one, but differently now - in a happier way, a way that brings back fond memories that make me smile, not cry.

I hope this book will help you get closer to that place, too - a place in which you can look back on the time you spent with your dog, and laugh, not cry.

I've covered a few topics in this book, including;

What is grief?

Dealing with guilt

Understanding other people's reactions to the death of your dog

Laying your dog to rest

Coming to terms with the loss of your dog

How to speak to children about the loss

Memorialising your dog

Coping With The Loss Of A Dog - Richard Oliver

    Chapter 1

    INTRODUCTION

Firstly, please allow me to extend my deepest sympathy to you for the loss of your friend, but please believe me when I say the feelings you are experiencing now will diminish over time and be replaced by happy memories.

That’s not to say that you will never grieve for your pet years from now, of course you will, but those feelings will be a world of difference to the feelings you are currently experiencing.

I hope this book helps you navigate the rocky road ahead, which at the moment you no doubt can’t see the end of.

It’s written based on my experiences of pet loss and the heartache that followed, and I hope I can help you by explaining the process of grief and ways in which to make it more tolerable.

Before we begin our journey please allow me to introduce myself. My name is Richard and I have been a dog lover ever since I could walk and was able to stroke the family dog, Pickles.

I’m 42 as I write this book and have lost four dogs which I have grieved for, and still grieve for to this day.

Writing this is extremely hard as it brings back memories of every happy walk I ever shared with each of my dogs, and reminds me that one day I will lose the beautiful companion I now have.

Let me first explain that I am not a dog expert. I’ve never succeeded in training any one of my dogs to a level higher than what is expected of them, such as pooping outside and not biting people or dogs!

I am just a dog lover like you, who thinks he can help you with the journey that has led you to read this book.

Thank you for trusting me, and I hope I will be of some help to you.

    Richard Oliver.
