The Younger Years…
Wup that hoe, wup that hoe (shawty violating)
-Yo Gotti
L isten, Neeka, stop stressing. If her friends think they’re going to jump in, then they’re going to get these hands just like her. I’m not gon’ let them bum bitches jump you,
Ayanna told her as she finished rubbing Vaseline on her face.
Neeka waved her hand dismissively. I ain’t worried about them jumping me.
I don’t know why you’re not.
Quanna pointed at the crowd waiting a few feet ahead of them. It’s like fifty of them over there. That scary bitch brought her whole family with her.
Quanna leaned her head forward so she could get a closer look at the group of women waiting for them at the end of the sidewalk. Is that her mama?
Lenika and Ayanna looked to where Quanna was pointing and shook their heads. It was indeed Carmen’s mama posted next to her, ready to fight.
Ayanna sucked her teeth and threw her small jar of Vaseline into the grass. I can’t believe this heffa dun brought her mama out here to help her fight after all of that yapping she was just doing on Facebook.
I don’t care about her mama. I got a mama too.
Lenika pulled her phone from her purse and dialed her mother’s number. Lenika started talking as soon as she answered the phone. Ma, you at home? Okay, so you know how I told you that Carmen said she wanted to fight me? Well I came to the park after school to fight her and she brought her mama with her.
Lenika smiled and pulled the phone away from her ear while her mother finished yelling and cursing about whooping Carmen’s mama’s ass for being childish, and how bad she was going to do her once she got there. She was yelling so loud Ayanna and Quanna could hear her through the phone.
Yes ma’am, we here now… okay, I will.
Lenika flipped her phone closed and stuck it back into the small fanny pack that she had snapped around her waist.
Ayanna looked at her with her eyebrows raised in anticipation. What she say?
Well, after she got done telling me that she’s going to skull drag the silicone out of Carmen’s mama’s fake ass,
all three of the girls giggled, she told me that she on her way up here and not to fight until she got here.
Quanna looked toward the group of people posted on the merry go round at the park before looking back at both of her friends.
So, what we supposed to do? Just stand here?
Lenika shrugged before popping her gum and pulling it back into her mouth. I don’t know. I mean, I don’t want to stand down here and they think we’re scared, but I don’t want to go against what my mama said either.
Well I say let’s go ahead on down there. You stay right around the corner. Your mama should be here in a minute.
Ayanna looked from Lenika to Quanna.
Lenika wanted to do what her mother had told her to, but like Ayanna said, she stayed right around the corner. It wouldn’t take her mama no time to get there. In anxious yet slow strides the trio marched toward the same park they’d been playing on since elementary school.
Since the fight had been instigated during the whole day of school and the ride home on the bus, pretty much everybody from her middle school that lived in Elizabeth Canty projects, affectionately nicknamed E-Canty by the natives, was already at the park and waiting for Lenika to get there.
It was the last day of the school week and the first day of spring break. The perfect day for a fight. However, that wasn’t anything new. Where they stayed, there was a fight damn near every day. Fighting might as well had been a sport the way it occurred in her neighborhood.
Being that it was the middle of March in southern Georgia, the sun was out and the temperature might as well had been next to scorching. The air was dry and void of any cool air. Sticky and dry was the heat that felt as if it was radiating from the hard pavement.
With sweat dripping down her brow, Lenika squinted and ran her hand over the top of her head, pushing away all the stray hairs that had made their way out of her ponytail holder.
Aye y’all, there they go right there,
Bucky yelled as he pointed in the direction Lenika and her friends were coming from.
Lenika and Ayanna both turned their nose up at Bucky, but only Ayanna voiced the thoughts that they both shared.
That lil ugly muthafucka get on my nerves.
Though Lenika agreed, she chose not to respond because her attention had been caught by something else. Carmen’s mom was smiling in her direction as she pulled her long sew in into a ponytail at the bottom of her neck. It disgusted Lenika that Carmen had been so scary that she had to call her mama to fight her battles for her.
She didn’t know what was worse; the fact that she brought her mama, or that her mama actually came. That was some childish mess. She could see exactly why Carmen acted the way she did now. Her mama hadn’t raised her ass right. Dumb bitches.
Yeah, come on, lil bitch. You was talking all that shit on the computer, so come on and get this ass whooping.
Carmen’s mom yelled.
Ever since Lenika had been a child, her parents had taught her not to disrespect adults but Carmen’s mama was asking for it. She had one more time to call her a bitch before she got popped first. One thing about it, the fight was supposed to be between Lenika and Carmen, but she was ready to hit anybody who wanted to get hit.
So, that’s what you got for me, Carmen? An ass whooping?
Lenika smirked at a nervous looking Carmen.
Her face was distorted and sweaty while her body movements were quick and anxious. She was standing still but kept wiping her hands on the white fabric of her shorts. Her bottom lip kept coming in and out of her mouth as she bit on it like some sort of starving animal.
Lenika hadn’t even gotten all the way to her and she could see the fear all over her face. Lenika had known all along that Carmen was a scary cat and probably wouldn’t want to fight her for real, but it was too late for that now. She’d spent the entire day allowing her little group of friends to amp her up for the very ass whooping that her mama claimed Lenika was about to get.
It was apparent by the way Carmen kept looking up at her mother that she was hoping she would to save her, but little did she know, her mama had her own set of problems she was about to be dealing with. The Navy blue Range Rover that Lenika’s father had gotten her mother for Valentine’s Day had just slammed to a stop in the middle of the street.
It was go time. Lenika smiled at her mother as her 5’3" frame rounded the truck in a pair of sweatpants, a tank top, and no shoes. Her short hair was still freshly styled from her visit to the beauty salon the day before, and she was just as stunning as she always was. Even with the murderous scowl she was wearing.
The look on her face was one of a woman on a mission. Her eyes scanned the park slowly until they landed on Lenika. As soon as she noticed her, she waved her hand, motioning for Lenika to come to her. With no hesitation, Lenika headed to her mother, but before she could reach her, Carmen’s mom was writing and prepping a check for Lenika’s mama to cash on her ass.
Nah, lil hoe, you gon’ fight today. Don’t get scared now.
That was it. Nothing else needed to be said. Rhonda, Lenika’s mother, and the heart of their projects let the cannons rip on Carmen’s mom.
Bitch!
She marched towards Carmen’s mother with her finger pointed. I will beat your muthafucking ass,
she yelled across the entire park.
Every child in the park got quiet, but Rhonda had it like that. She had that mama voice. It didn’t matter where you were or who you were, if you were under the age of eighteen, when she spoke, you shut the fuck up. End of discussion.
All eyes were on Carmen’s mom. It was clear that everyone feared for her safety as Rhonda closed in on her and stopped with just enough distance for her to swing when she was ready.
Don’t get quiet now, hoe. You thought I wasn’t gon’ catch your ass, didn’t you?
Rhonda balled her fists up and took a step back. You been asking for this whooping for a minute now, and I let your pitiful ass live, but you passed a whole ’nother level today fucking with mine.
Rhonda kept her eyes on Carmen’s mom while talking to Lenika.
Neeka, drag this lil hoe while I get in her mama ass real quick.
Rhonda’s word was bond, so Lenika wasted no more time. Just as fast as her mama had throat punched Carmen’s mom, she had tapped Carmen’s ass. The playground went wild as the mother daughter tag team put in work on their weaker opponents. Hair and nails were everywhere as Lenika and Rhonda beat ass.
Rowdy slurs of encouragement could be heard from the crowd of children that had gathered for only one fight but ended up getting double the entertainment. Everybody in the neighborhood knew that Rhonda had them beaters for your ass, but no one had given much thought to the fact that Lenika was her mother’s child.
She was busy dog walking the shit out of Carmen while Rhonda was going round for round with Carmen’s mom. Her screams could be heard as Rhonda dragged her from the grass out into the street, all the while still landing blow after blow to her head and face.
Rhonda!
Riley’s deep voice boomed throughout the park, ceasing all movement.
Lenika’s arm had been mid swing when she dropped Carmen’s long ponytail from her hand and looked up at her father. Along with everyone else in the park, Lenika waited to see what her father was going to do next. Now, on any given day, Lenika was a girl with her own mind, unable to be tamed by anyone, but that all went out of the window when it came to Riley.
That nigga was the muthafucking truth. A lot of people talked about how hard some of the local hood stars were and how they didn’t tolerate this or that, but Riley was that nigga for real. Everyone in E-Canty knew it too. No one dared go against Riley from the children to the adults. Especially the adults. Lenika and Rhonda included.
That was why Lenika had no idea as to why her mother was still beating the dog shit out of Carmen’s mom, even after Riley had called her name, obviously, his effort at ending the fight.
Rhonda, I know you hear me talking to your ass.
Just like she’d done the first time, Rhonda ignored him and continued beating ass. Though Lenika was caught off guard by her mother’s actions, she had to applaud her. Rhonda was a bad bitch, and even with her having already known that, seeing her buck against one of the most ruthless niggas in Columbus had her hype as hell.
She’d always looked up to her mother and wondered why she endured some of the stuff that she did at the hands of her father, but Lenika also knew that Rhonda was her own woman. If she was taking shit off of Riley, you better believe there was a reason behind it.
Rhonda!
Riley grabbed her from behind, willing her to let go of Carmen’s mother, but that shit wasn’t happening. Well, at least not until he pried her hands out of her the nappy sew in Carmen’s mother had been wearing.
All the laughter and jabbering that had been going on during the fight had stopped, and the park was nearly silent minus the moans and grunts coming from Rhonda and Carmen’s mom.
Riley, let me go,
Rhonda screamed as he pulled her toward her car. Nigga, put me the fuck down.
You better shut your ass up. I don’t know who the fuck you think you’re talking to.
Lenika watched as her parents pushed and pulled at each other until they were both standing in the front of Rhonda’s truck.
What you out here acting like a fucking hood rat for? Huh? Out here fighting with Neeka like you’re her gotdamn age.
Riley’s voice echoed around the yard as he hoovered over Rhonda.
With her being the next thing to a midget, and Riley being almost 6’4", the two were an odd couple, and it showed in that moment. He had to nearly bend his entire body over just to get into her face, and it was seriously a sight to see.
Rhonda snatched her hand from Riley and tried to walk away. Nigga, get out of my face. It’s your fault, anyway.
It damn sure is. He can’t get enough of this pussy, you leprechaun looking bitch,
Carmen’s mom taunted as she pulled herself from the ground.
Rhonda tried to launch herself at her again, but was stopped by Riley. Lenika, on the other hand, didn’t have anybody holding her back, and ran to where Carmen’s mom was and kicked her in the side of the head. Ooh’s and ahh’s circulated around the park as she fell to the ground again. Nobody that could talk to Rhonda like that in front of Lenika. That was her mom and her everything. Carmen’s mom had lost her mind.
Lenika, care your ass home right now,
Riley told her in a firm tone.
Even with all her adrenaline pumping and all of her classmates looking for another good show, Lenika knew not to buck against Riley. Her father loved her, and on most days, she was a daddy’s girl, but what he said went and there
