About this ebook

Do you ever feel like you aren't in control of your emotions?

Are you looking for moral guidance that can help you achieve the best for yourself?  Then keep reading…

Whenever we ask ourselves how to face a challenge, or simply how to be happy, we are actually asking ourselves how to best lead our lives. But where can we find valid answers in today's world?

The answer surprisingly can be found in the teachings of the most famous ancient philosophers.

Their philosophy, known as Stoicism, is a concept founded in ancient Athens that teaches to act on the basis of what is really under our control, and to have, as a wise stoic prayer said, «the serenity of accepting the things we cannot change, the courage to intervene on those we can change, and the wisdom to distinguish one from the other».

Stoicism will teach you:

  • History of Stoicism philosophers: including Seneca, Marcus Aurelius, and Epictetus
  • Modern Stoicism and general misconceptions about Stoicism
  • Discipline of action: right action, problem solving, pragmatism, and duty
  • Discipline of will: kindness and virtue, resilience and fortitude, armor fati and acceptance
  • Situational practices (pain management, emotional intelligence, behaviour therapy)
  • Stoicism exercises/practices in everyday modern living

Excellent, informative, and useful read into "how to live a good life". I've long been interested in Stoic philosophy, and this book goes in depth into the ideas, how and why they're useful, and how to apply them. The practices are great.

How to Use Stoicism to Make Your Life Better

Conclusion

Introduction

What is stoicism?

Most people want to live the best life possible. There are many who are constantly looking for ways to make themselves happier, more successful, or more positive. There are also many who struggle with creating this type of life for various reasons. Some of these reasons can stem from childhood trauma or problems while other reasons stem from situations in adult life. No matter what the reason is that you feel is keeping you from reaching your best life, you need to know that it’s possible to overcome it and this book is one way that can help you.

Stoicism is a word you might have heard of in the past, whether it was in school or because you ran into it online or somewhere else. It’s often a word that makes people think of statues of ancient Greece. But Stoicism is so much more than that. Stoicism is a way of life that can help you achieve happiness and freedom from your emotions that control you. Through Stoicism, you will learn how to control your emotions so when you make decisions, YOU'RE making the decisions and not your emotions.

At this point, I feel it’s important for me to discuss how the word understanding is an important part of a Stoic’s beliefs. When a person is understanding of situations, they are more likely to remain in control of their emotions during situations, even when the situations become chaotic. On top of this, you’re more likely to think clearly, or logically, when you are understanding. In terms, understanding means that you can comprehend the situation and you’re sympathetic to the way other people feel. Once you are able to reach the level of understanding situations or how a person feels, you’ll be able to control your emotions, which will allow you to remain calm. If you don’t understand the situation, you’re going to have a harder time controlling your emotions and remaining calm. This often happens because people have unanswered questions or the misunderstanding makes them feel frustrated, angry, or negatively in another way.

Through the exercises and the techniques you will learn when you practice Stoicism, you will be able to satisfy your hunger for happiness. While people are generally happy, they often feel the need for more to completely satisfy their happiness. For example, when someone increases their income with a new job or raise, they will be happy and content with this income for a while but will feel a hunger for a larger income later. People who practice Stoicism won’t feel this hunger as they are happy with what they have. Stoics don’t have a list of desires that they feel will satisfy their happiness. This is because one of the many factors that Stoicism gives a person in their life is seeing the truth of situations, emotions, and life in general.

While Stoicism has a great definition, it’s also very complex and goes way beyond any definition you will find on the Internet. For example, let’s look at a can of soda. Soda is something that can be good or bad, depending on how you look at it. For someone who doesn’t practice Stoicism, they will see the can of soda through their beliefs. In a sense, they will be either supportive or critics of the soda, depending on how they feel. If they love the taste, have a caffeine addiction, and don’t pay attention to their health, they will be supportive of soda. However, someone who is focused on their health will be a critic of soda because of its health effects, such as high blood sugar levels and gaining weight. Someone who practices Stoicism, while they might have internal emotions towards soda, they would be able to control these emotions. Therefore, when the person decides to drink the soda or not, they make the decision in a logical way and not based on emotions.

Principles of Stoicism

Discussing the principles of Stoicism is a great way to explain what Stoicism is. There are several key principles to discuss, such as finding a mentor, acknowledging your emotions, how life goes on when you fail, be honest, reflecting on your time, and being present in every moment.

Rational Life is the Greatest Virtue

Emotions and irrational thoughts tend to cloud our mind. They make our mind foggy so we can’t think in the ways we should when situations arise. When our minds become cloudy, we don’t always think before we act or speak. Instead, we act irrationally and sometimes quickly, which could easily make the situation worse. We don’t see the long-term benefits which can come from
