Chapter 1: How to Be More Stoic
The old philosophy of Stoicism has affected many lives. Here are some manners in which to become more stoic.
1. The Dichotomy of Control
The chief job in life is simply this: to recognize and separate issues, so that I can say clearly to myself which are externals that are not under my control, and which have to do with the choices I actually control. Where then do I look for good and wicked? Not to uncontrollable externals, but within myself to the choices that are my own ...
Epictetus
The single most essential practice in Stoic philosophy is separating between what we can change and what we can't. What we have influence over and what we do not. A flight is delayed because of weather-- no amount of yelling at an airline agent will end a storm. No amount of wanting will make you taller or much shorter or born in a completely different nation. It doesn't matter how hard you try, you can't make someone like you. And aside from that, time spent hurling yourself at these immovable items is time not being spent on the things we can change.
Return to this question daily-- in each and each attempting situation. Journal and assess it continuously. If you can focus on explaining what parts of your day are within your control and what parts are not, you will not only be happier, you are going to have a unique benefit over others who fail to realize they're fighting an unwinnable fight.
2. Journal
" Only a few people care now about the marches and countermarches of the Roman leaders. What the centuries have held on to is a notebook of thoughts by a man whose reality was mostly unknown who put down in the midnight
