Darkest December
Chiara Evans
Dedicated to my Father, Robert S. Evans
And my good friend, Adam A. Olalde
Dear Dad I
And it breaks my very soul to see your smile
Just because I carry it well doesn’t mean it doesn’t hurt
Intuition
We were never introduced
I simply knew you
All of you and all at once
There were no secrets between us
You were everything you
Showed yourself to be
We never had to get to know one another
We learned each other through growth
The Knot, Part I
Coming across the knot,
It can be intriguing to try and untie,
Come on,
Try your hand!
Can you solve the puzzle of the knot?
Its intricacies wound up tight
Underlying patterns fascinating to the sight
A mess of rope
Existing in infinite space
Piece by piece
Added ever so carefully
Tied with love, hate, fear, and longing
What’s on the surface
Appears beautiful, opalescent
Still, it is screaming underneath
The hidden complexities
Bursting below
Suffocating certain patterns
So pluck away
Some ends were better left to fray
Tied into a colorful abstract
Connected and lost within themselves
The knot goes forever on and on
Easily solved at the beginning
Harder to relieve later
Do you think you can untie the knot?
What if you get it fully undone?
What once existed
A masterpiece of experience
Will be forever lost
And at what cost?
Ends cut most frequently
A strange unseen force of organization
Working against the layers of time
Solving the puzzle of the knot
Who knows if it will prevail?
Nocturnal Strangers
There’s a silent urgency in this deafening emergency
We’re pleading, we’re bleeding, but still, mind over matter sweetie
It isn’t easy but it’s here
This duality serves neither of us, but still we’re painting faces with fresh blood
We see lurkers, hiding within the trees and skittering between shadows
The darkness wraps around us all, both sword and shield
Still every night plays out the same
And the morning will never touch us, at least not unless we want it to
Just remember though not this time, there’s a lot of bad, and beware
Within Smoke
The candle burns bright
beside the fire tonight
And there’s another glow emanating from
the tip of your lips
The walls are dancing amongst the lights
Smoke circles trilling a storied yellow halo
above your
