By Jove, It’s all about Jupiter!

Why an entire series on Jupiter? Because it’s so big.

Small starts turn into big projects when Jupiter is involved. Jupiter is big, but not very dense. Massive, getting out of control, where is this going, continually expanding vapor—that’s Jupiter.

Of course, the danger with Jupiter is that things can get too big to complete. As the scope and scale keep expanding, expectations overwhelm, the word count keeps increasing, more ideas, more research, more content, more, more, more.

Can I have a shot of Saturn with that? Bring it back down to earth so I can finish this darn book?

Jupiter’s role is to create the big picture. The Greater Benefic inflates everything it comes in contact with. It’s the role of other planets in the astrological schematic to set limits and add form to Jupiter’s continually expanding reach and make sure Jupiter’s balloon doesn’t burst.

Greek scholar Claudius Ptolomy lived and wrote in Alexandria Egypt during the Hellenistic period. His contribution to the philosophy and science of his time is a foundational authority for the concepts and applied techniques still used in western astrology.

And according to Ptolemy in his text, the TETRABIBLOS:

When Jupiter rules alone, he produces increase in general, and, in particular, when the prediction is concerned with men, he makes fame and prosperity, abundance, peaceful existence, the increase of the necessities of life, bodily and spiritual health, and, furthermore, benefits and gifts from rulers, and the increase, greatness, and magnanimity of these latter; and in general he is the cause of happiness. With reference to dumb animals, he causes a multitude and abundance of those that are useful to men and the diminution and destruction of the opposite kind. He makes the condition of the air temperate and healthful, windy, moist, and favorable to the growth of what the earth bears; he brings about the fortunate sailing of fleets, the moderate rise of rivers, abundance of crops, and everything similar.

A good dude to have on your side, eh?

Of course, the operative sentence, here is When Jupiter rules alone . . . And that rarely happens completely. There are many other planetary bodies, plus the Sun and Moon, that have a say in an individual’s astrological playbook. It’s always nice when they are all lined up in agreement, but that doesn’t happen often either. Life is just not that easy. But even in an imperfect world, Jupiter often finds a way to strut his stuff.

The planet Jupiter was first outed as the home turf of the Mesopotamian God Marduk, head of the Babylonian pantheon and patron deity of the city of Babylon in the first or second millennium BC. As Marduk evolved through the years, he adopted the Greek name Zeus and then became the Roman King of all the Gods with the additional moniker, Jove.

With the advent of Christianity, Jupiter adopted his planet address as his given name and became just Jupiter. He occasionally dons some more contemporary garb and trots around in character. For example, Santa Claus at Christmas time. It’s probably an old habit left over from his days as Zeus. But for our purposes, he goes by Jupiter.

Jupiter adapted, but he never lost his personality or influence. He’s as big a wheeler dealer now as he ever was, and has retained his role as a patron, protector, and provider.

In today’s modern world, where women have achieved a more prominent social role, Jupiter is adapting again, and is bestowing his favors in a more even-handed manner. Nevertheless, Jupiter is still a guy and will occasionally identify with, and grant his biggest favors to, a paternal or other prominent masculine influence in a female’s chart. And in fairness to Jupiter, the reason is partly due to the fact that the Sun in a woman’s chart will often indicate conditions around a primary male archetype in her life. So when Jupiter is coordinating efforts with the Sun, it’s not unusual for the male to be featured. However, I suspect that when Jupiter does so, it’s with full approval and full support.

Now, before you accuse me of being too illogical or silly with all this talk of a planet’s human personification, I would direct you to some additional reading. Try Carl Jung’s theories of inherited archetypes in the field of psychology. Or Joseph Campbell’s work on the role of mythology in human nature.

With the advent of computers and the ability to collect and process massive amounts of data, there is a small but growing body of statistical evidence showing many astrological assumptions as having relevance.

However, the mystery and magic of how or why astrology works probably lives in a view of the universe, and our role in it, that is philosophically more aligned with the ideas of the great minds of earlier times.

Anyone who has studied astrology in its full context, and has seen it in action, knows that it does work. It just does. There is no explaining it away. So perhaps, with that as a starting point and some reverse engineering, maybe someday in the land of physics, scientists will develop theories of the universe that allow for astrology . . . and maybe even a little magic.

When Jupiter is on the hunt for opportunities, big ideas and lucky synchronicities, he most often finds them in areas that are governed by the zodiac sign he occupies. The zodiac sign defines Jupiter’s playbook, dictates his travel plans, and drives his sales pitch.

How well Jupiter serves the solar agenda depends on how well the Sun and Jupiter are able to achieve common ground. If Jupiter serves up opportunities that do not suit the ego needs of the Sun, then Jupiter’s efforts may go unnoticed or unfulfilled.

bodies contribute support, then the possibilities for growth and achievement can be unlimited.

Jupiter’s orbit around the Sun takes 11.86 years, approximately one year per zodiac sign. However, every 398 days, the earth overtakes Jupiter and, from the point of view of Earth, it causes Jupiter to appear to go backward or retrograde. Jupiter spends about eighteen weeks each year in an optical illusion retracing its steps backward through the zodiac.

As an average, Jupiter connects with the Sun by sign for one month every twelve years. The Sun itself spends one month out of each year in every other zodiac sign. So, in a perfectly round solar system, this would connect every Sun sign in the zodiac to one annual Jupiter transit.

But of course, it’s not a perfectly round solar system. And because of Jupiter’s apparent retrograde movement, this can cause it to miss a Sun sign as it orbits through the zodiac. Therefore, the Sun will occasionally go twenty-four years, and on rare occasions, thirty-six years, missing its connection to Jupiter in a single zodiac sign. It can also occasionally repeat a Sun sign connection two years in a row.

    About This Research:

This book is a study of how Jupiter operates with the Sun in the natal chart and is composed of 144 combinations. Some combinations seem to cooperate more smoothly than others, but all the combinations have the potential to be successful.

Keep in mind that the meaning of success is in the eye of the beholder. I have used public personalities for this research because they are the most available for study and because the nature of being well-known often implies a strong Jupiter signature. I have also found that it is helpful to study artists because their creative work often exemplifies the purest manifestations of the archetypes.

But remember that the concept of success is not limited to worldly recognition, or even necessarily to wealth in monetary terms. Jupiter’s success metric should be determined by how well the personality is able to satisfy the ego needs of the Sun sign—not everyone wants to be famous, or even rich.

    1. Jupiter in the Sign of Aries

When Jupiter sleuths for opportunities and luck in the sign of Aries, his playbook includes rules for living life on your own terms.

    Unambiguous, unequivocal, unapologetic, and uncompromising.

Although it may seem that there is an element of selfishness to this position, it’s really more about integrity. Your ambitions are related to your desire to have the freedom to find personal fulfillment according to your own expectations. Your ambitions could range from becoming a captain of industry to owning your own woodworking shop – the point is not how high you can fly, but how free you are to express yourself.

You are the entrepreneur of the Zodiac, and if you become rich and famous, it’s more a byproduct of following your own muse than acquiring status for status’s sake. It can be quite a nice signature because, as a result of being determined to have it your way, you have more chances than the norm to be happy in your career choices. Of course, having it your way doesn’t mean you can skip the part about considering the needs of others in some of your decisions. Sometimes this is one of those lessons you have to learn along the way. And often, because you are an individualist whose self-expression is based on your own truth, you end up as a leader. You can become an example for others to follow.

Aries is impetuous and doesn’t waste time over thinking things. Learning by experience, testing limits, and challenging the status quo is Jupiter’s travel itinerary to self-discovery in Aries. And self-discovery is essentially what Jupiter in Aries is seeking.

The forthright qualities of Jupiter in Aries can make an attractive romantic partner. If you are interested, you don’t hesitate to make your move. And others can find you easy to be around, because they always know exactly where they stand with you. Others tend to respond to your positive vibe, your optimism and are perhaps flattered by your attention. On the other hand, Aries can be impulsive and a trial-and-error approach might get you into some pickles that are more difficult to get out of than to get into. The further along you are on that road to self-discovery, the more harmonious your love life will be.

When it comes to recognizing opportunities that are lucky for you, it’s all things Aries that you need to pay attention to. Jupiter is the giver of the goodies and, in the sign of Aries, his gift bag is full of Mars-ruled products and Aries experiences.

If you are looking for that perfect gift for Jupiter in Aries, consider Mars rules tools, especially sharp ones. Maybe woodworking or garden tools or good quality kitchen knives. Aries is a craftsman. And sporting equipment and clothes. Perhaps the latest jogging outfit. Aries is a competitor. Aries rules the head, so hats and scarves might appeal. Perhaps a cap from a favorite sports team. First editions might please. A book or perhaps a first run print.

Aries competes to be first. Second in line is not the lucky spot. Only number one will do. So, for example, start-up business opportunities and entrepreneurial ventures as opposed to franchises or copycat products. New ideas and being first-to-market have the edge. Investing in companies that are innovating and breaking new ground are where Jupiter in Aries cashes in.

Aries is also a good craftsman. Using tools and manufacturing things constructed from hard materials, especially metals, iron and steel, and glass are well-starred. Especially if they are unique.

When looking for opportunities to start or invest in businesses, qualify your options against Aries and Mars keywords and choose among those. It’s certainly not the only consideration but as a guideline it will serve you well. Manufacturing something new and original is a good bet. Products made from metal, such as automobiles, equipment and tools are also worth looking into. Taking a risk on a new stock issue, a new idea, a new technology, a new product is a gamble that will appeal. Just make sure you don’t invest more than you have to lose if things go south. Taking a small chance on several is a good way to leverage risk. One of them could turn out to be the next Apple.

Aries is a cardinal fire sign. Aries enthusiastically initiates action.

A firm believer in The early bird catches the worm, Jupiter in Aries is usually out the door at first light. Careers often begin while young, and preparation and training sometimes happens on the job. For Jupiter in Aries, there is just no time like the present.

Having confidence and being decisive are the tickets to realizing the most benefit from the gifts that Jupiter in Aries brings to the table, and confidence grows through self-discovery. And self-discovery grows with experience.

So, get out there and get started, and if at first you don’t succeed, well you know as they say, try again.

And, remember, the trick to making this work for you in the best way possible is to do the hard part, finish what you start.

The largest athletic shoe company in the world, Nike, first founded January 25, 1964 when Jupiter was in Aries, sums it up nicely and with a swish—Just Do It.

    ONE

Sun in Aries with Jupiter in Aries

Sun in Aries with Jupiter in Aries is first.

    It’s just that simple.

The first section of the first chapter and the first letter of the alphabet.

    Just as nature intended.

And with Jupiter also in Aries, there will be very little dispute that it is the proper order of things. Being first is your birthright to protect and defend. You know it and anyone else who doesn’t know it will soon find out.

The essence of the Aries experience is the expression of self in heroic terms. It’s a tall order and key learnings come from experience. Aries starts early and goes forth fearlessly to meet and vanquish all who would dare to test their personal truth.

French philosopher, Rene Descartes (b. 1596), said it best, I think, therefore, I am.

Descartes refused to accept the authority of previous philosophers. He declared his views as distinctly apart from those of his predecessors by asserting that he would write as if no one had written on these matters before.[1]

American mythologist Joseph Campbell (b. 1904) is best known for his work in comparative mythology and religion. The central pattern, or monomyth, described by Campbell is often referred to as The Hero’s Journey and describes the typical adventure of the archetype known as The Hero who, through great suffering, reached an experience of the eternal source and returned with gifts powerful enough to set their society free.[2]

A hero ventures forth from the world of common day into a region of supernatural wonder: fabulous forces are there encountered and a decisive victory is won: the hero comes back from this mysterious adventure with the power to bestow boons on his fellow man.

Seeing oneself in heroic terms is the Aries experience.

And while your average highly socialized Aries Sun sign may have to dig into their personal history a bit to remind themselves of their inner gladiator, when Jupiter enters the picture things get very dramatic very quickly.

Just ask actor, Russell Crowe (b. 1964), who may be best known for his role in the movie Gladiator.

In fact, speaking of gladiators, Rome itself was founded on April 24, 753 BC when both the Sun and Jupiter were in Aries.

With both the Sun and Jupiter in fire sign Aries, instincts are sharp and Jupiter easily serves the Sun’s ambitions. The road to success for this signature is littered with nuggets of opportunity, and Aries will pick them up. Sometimes too many of them, but taking risks is in their DNA. They need a challenge to feel alive.

There is also a great deal of creativity with this position. Author and poet, Maya Angelou (b. 1928) was most well-known for her autobiographies. Her writing, based on her own life experience, elevated her to a position of leadership and authority as a spokesperson on social issues of race and gender. Sharing and mythologizing her personal story to become a much-admired inspiration to others is a wonderful example of Aries Sun and Aries Jupiter returning from the hero’s journey with gifts for society.

Jupiter propels Aries toward leadership. Sports, politics and the military will often appeal to their competitive spirit.

If Sun in Aries decides to recruit Jupiter to help it go into business, it’s quite possible that they will be making something. Aries is a fine craftsman and a whiz with tools, especially metal ones. And you can bet that whatever they decide to produce will be first quality. It’s a matter of integrity for Aries.

But Aries, can we talk a little bit about the downside? Nothing is ever perfect and with expansive Jupiter in (headstrong) Aries, the danger is always in too much of a good thing.

Aries is the firstborn sign of the zodiac, and the Aries ego is probably the last to mature of all the signs.

This signature comes with more than their share of admirers. There is nothing more attractive than someone whose self-confidence is obvious. But sometimes even heroes have some growing up to do. Impulsivity and temper can be a downfall. Brett Saberhagen, baseball’s two-time Cy Young award winner, was also known for his perpetual adolescence. He was suspended from Major League Baseball for throwing bleach and firecrackers at reporters.[3]

Conan O’Brien (b. 1963) lost his bid to be the top dog in late night television, thwarted by his lackluster ratings.[4]

The network moved him to a less prominent time slot behind Jay Leno and his very public tantrum and legal battles over his network contract provided the material for other comedians’ jokes for a long time.

The Gladiator himself, Russell Crowe, is almost as well-known for his temper as his talent. Numerous altercations from bar-room brawls, threatening producers, and getting arrested for assaulting a hotel clerk are colorful additions to his otherwise distinguished resume.[5]

Jupiter’s luck follows those who act with integrity, show leadership, and share gifts. Whatever they are. Being famous is not required. But in your world, Sun in Aries/Jupiter in Aries, you will become your own unique brand and someone else’s inspiration.

Your story, your nobility, your fearlessness, your integrity can inspire someone, maybe many someones. In your family, your community, among your employees—somewhere you are, or will be, someone’s hero.

Your challenge, Sun in Aries/Jupiter in Aries, is to remember in times of stress, that when the temptation to throw firecrackers becomes difficult to resist, take a breath. It may save some later repair work on your rep.

Sun in Aries/Jupiter in Aries partnerships formed with another person who has their Sun or Jupiter in a fire sign (Aries, Leo, or Sagittarius) can be a beneficial and prosperous combination.

    TWO

Sun in Taurus with Jupiter in Aries

I suspect that the Greek genius who first discovered the mathematical ratio of the golden mean—maybe Euclid or Pythagoras—was probably a Taurus.

For a Taurus, it’s your connection to the earth and your instinctive aesthetic sensitivity to naturally occurring forms that support your uncanny ability to predict things, like the future collectability of some object d’art. You are also probably good at estimating compounded interest in your head.

And you generally move about as fast as grass grows.

Jupiter in fire sign Aries is a self-starter. In order to be first, plodding earth sign Taurus must get out there and get going. Jupiter in this position offers up opportunities early, sometimes shockingly early.

This approach can cause some tension for methodical, cautious Sun in Taurus, but it can also provide a nice benefit.

When Jupiter in Aries focuses a bolt of lucky opportunity at Sun in Taurus early in life, and Taurus takes the bait, they can secure the rewards of those early efforts in some safe investments, and it’s a win-win.

Shirley Temple (b. 1928) was discovered at the age of three and had an international movie career by the age of six. She had earned the equivalent in today’s dollars of 34 million by the time she was twelve, when her career began to wane. Her parents then bought out her contract and returned her to a more normal life and regular school. She was financially set and was able to devote her adult life to more personal interests: her family and a second career as a diplomat.[6]

I have one piece of advice for those of you who want to receive the lifetime achievement award. Start early. —Shirley Temple Black

For Taurus, it doesn’t get much better than that.

Being self-taught often features with self-starting Jupiter in Aries. But it’s not necessarily the easiest path. It might take a tenacious Taurus to stay on course.

Legendary tennis champion Pancho Gonzales (b. 1928), the number one world player for eight years straight, taught himself to play starting at the age of twelve.[7]

Fashion designer Tommy Hilfiger (b. 1951) used his Taurus eye for design to start his clothing business while he was still in high school. He built his brand into an empire that made him a billionaire.[8]

The Sun in Taurus/Jupiter in Aries signature has produced some of the most Aries bold and unique artists, who command very high price tags in the Taurus art market. Salvador Dali (b. 1904)[9] and Willem de Kooning (b. 1904) [10] share this signature. And it’s one that doesn’t underestimate its own worth.

Even if you can’t join them, you can still collect them.

Or if you aren’t into paintings, how about high-end sports cars?

Ferruccio Lamborghini (b. 1916) created the Lamborghini, one of the most expensive and collectible sports cars in the world. Both Aries and Taurus approve of that.

Taurus is concerned with security. Money buys freedom from needing to worry about money. It buys comfort, a home with a nice garden. A place for family to gather and friends to visit. Security for your old age. Maybe a splurge on a nice set of silk sheets. A Taurus is not necessarily a workaholic. They can work hard when they need to, but once their security has been established, they can also be the first to relax and enjoy the benefits of their labor.

Taurus takes pride in being frugal and often finds joy in a simple life.

Jupiter in Aries is the lucky token for this signature. Aries is an individualist, a self-starter, a pioneer, and a competitor. Always on the lookout for new challenges and ready to go at a moment’s notice. So the minute Taurus settles down in their comfy recliner, luck seems to dissipate. It’s adventures that bring security.

The famous adventuring hobo Leon Ray Livingston (b. 1872), author of The Ways of the Hobo wrote twelve books on how to travel as a hobo while he spent his entire adult life riding randomly around the country on trains. He became quite famous and amassed wealth from his books, but he never stopped his rambling. He did, however, treat himself to a luxurious hotel room when he reached his various destinations.[11]

One potential downside of this combination is that Taurus feels most secure in ownership. Taurus wants to be able to reach out and touch what it perceives to be theirs. Jupiter in Aries can get combative in its thrust to be first in line. So the question becomes, what is Taurus trying to be first in line for? Fighting with other people about ownership is an enormous waste, and certainly not a positive manifestation of the potential of this combination.

Be adventurous and daring, and Jupiter will favor you. Be grasping and Jupiter will work against you.

Sun in Taurus/Jupiter in Aries partnerships formed with another person who has Jupiter in an earth sign (Taurus, Virgo, or Capricorn) and/or Sun in a fire sign (Aries, Leo, or Sagittarius) can prove to be a beneficial and prosperous combination.

    THREE

Sun in Gemini with Jupiter in Aries

Gemini’s domain is the world of media and the exchange of ideas and information. TV, radio, books, newspapers, magazines, and internet are all in Gemini’s charge.

As a versatile thinker, interested in ideas and collecting and analyzing information, Gemini is a witty conversationalist, a good writer, and a good marketer.

You also consider yourself a very rational thinker, although some people may occasionally take issue with that. Jupiter in Aries adds action and, if necessary, a fight to promote or defend your ideas.

Dr. Death, Jack Kevorkian (b. 1928), publicly championed a terminal patient’s right to die via physician-assisted suicide. Some people consider him a hero, but he also spent eight years in jail, convicted of murder.[12]

Aries is pioneering and original. Jupiter offers Sun in Gemini the opportunity to individuate and gain recognition for being unique. And while new ideas, exciting discoveries, and inventions can be the result of Jupiter’s pioneering efforts, when combined with Gemini’s versatile thinking, it doesn’t necessarily preclude other options. Extreme eccentricity or being the subject of the gossip columns can’t be ruled out.

Jupiter in Aries promises to get Sun in Gemini talked about. For what, it doesn’t say.

French painter Andre Durain (b. 1880) originated a new style of painting that he labeled Fauvism. He was also the toast of Parisian society until he was branded a Nazi collaborator—fairly or unfairly—during the German occupation of France.[13]

But when Jupiter is working well with Sun in Gemini, the results will be newsworthy and Aries-worthy firsts:

The first female war correspondent allowed in a combat zone, Margaret Boruke-White (b. 1904).[14]

The first female advertising executive voted the top newsmaker by Ad Age, Mary Wells Lawrence (b. 1928).[15]

The first woman astronaut allowed into space, Sally Ride (b. 1951).[16]

Taboo-busting sex therapist and talk-radio pioneer Dr. Ruth Westheimer (b. 1928) made a name for herself talking candidly and humorously about sex. She has written more than forty books, hosted radio talk, and appeared on TV.[17]

When it comes to collecting information, Gemini is a sponge. There’s probably not much anyone can tell you that you haven’t already learned, heard of, or read somewhere.

Robert McNamara (b. 1916) earned the moniker whiz kid as a leader of the team that rebuilt Ford Motor Company after World War II, and as Secretary of Defense under President Kennedy. He played a pivotal role in escalating the United States’ involvement in the Vietnam War.[18]

Of course history has shown that to have been a bad decision, but Jupiter in Aries isn’t one to shy away from a fight.

There is an IT factor that goes along with this signature. Angelina Jolie (b. 1975) has it. Gemini is witty and pretty good at working a room. But there is more to it than just being a desirable party guest. Jupiter in Aries has ambitions to distinguish themselves as a leader.

Becoming world famous to satisfy Jupiter in Aries’s ambitions isn’t required. But in your sphere of influence, you will likely achieve a level of name recognition. Maybe for smarts and leadership, maybe for athleticism, maybe just for being the neighborhood eccentric.

But any way you slice it, Sun in Gemini/Jupiter in Aries is interesting and people talk about you. And if Jupiter in Aries has anything to say about it, that sphere of influence will continue to grow.

Jupiter in Aries favors daring. Exploring new ideas, breaking through restrictions and barriers. Being unique and original. Charting new territory. Aries wants to lead, and Jupiter will bring rewards for being assertive.

A word of advice for this dynamic duo: train your brain to think critically. With all that is going on in Gemini’s head and Jupiter’s inclination to push you out front, it will help a great deal if your ability to think critically has been honed to perfection. A little Socrates never hurt anyone. And for Sun in Gemini/Jupiter in Aries, the likelihood of getting noticed for what you think, write, and say is pretty strong. If your arguments are not only forceful but reasonable and eloquent, that’s a good thing, right?

Sun in Gemini/Jupiter in Aries partnerships formed with another person who has Jupiter in an air sign (Gemini, Libra, or Aquarius) and or the Sun in a fire sign (Aries, Leo, or Sagittarius) can prove to be a beneficial and prosperous combination.

    FOUR

Sun in Cancer with Jupiter in Aries

Sun in Cancer/Jupiter in Aries connects two cardinal signs in fire and water, with the potential for a lot of steam! Both have ambitions, and passions are strong.

    Cancer is sensitive and complicated.

Underneath that sometimes-crusty shell, they feel things. Lots of things. And they feel them deeply throughout the body, especially in the stomach. Emotional security is bounded in family ties, and the ups and downs of those ties define their relationship with the world on a daily basis. Today they are nursing someone they care for back to health; tomorrow they may be curled up in the fetal position, needing their own hugs. When Sun sign horoscopes describe Cancer as moody, well . . . that’s what they are talking about. Cancer absorbs and reflects their environment, and it’s a lot nicer when their surroundings are pleasant and supportive.

But while it’s difficult for Cancer when the blood ties of family are unavailable or unsupportive, it’s also true that Cancer has the unique ability to create found family. Any lucky person who has been selected by a Cancer to be part of their inner circle will understand. Is Cancer the only one who never forgets your birthday AND sends a gift? Are you feeling ill? How about some chicken soup? Or maybe a crowd-funding campaign? Whatever it takes, they are there for you.

Jupiter in Aries presents some challenges, as well as opportunities, for sensitive Cancer. While Aries is similar to Cancer in that it is a doer with the ability to get things started, the approach is quite different. The Aries impulse to action is direct. The Cancer impulse to action is indirect. Aries mows down their opponents, Cancer gives lip service and then figures out a way to go around them.

Competitive Jupiter in Aries also offers athleticism. Cancer’s essence lives in the emotional body. Emotional expression in physical form is one of the ways Jupiter in Aries serves Sun in Cancer well.

    Dancing is a great example.

Visionary and intensely driven director and choreographer Bob Fosse (b. 1927) revolutionized dancing on film. His dances were original, physically demanding, sexually provocative, and emotionally expressive.[19]

    And body builders.

Professional wrestler and body builder Jesse The Body Ventura (b. 1951) had a successful career with the World Wrestling Federation (WWF).[20]

Cancer is also good at business, with a head for real estate, merchandising, and financial management. With Jupiter in Aries providing the drive and opportunities for leadership, it’s not unusual to find this combination with the letters CEO as part of their signature—particularly in Cancer specialties like finance, real estate, children, family, and food.

In fact, if there is a family business, Sun in Cancer/Jupiter in Aries is a likely candidate to be the one appointed to run it.

Christopher Kennedy (b. 1963), son of Robert F. Kennedy, first presided over a commercial property management company with holdings owned by the Kennedy family. Later, he started the non-profit company Top Box Foods, a company that purchases and redistributes discounted boxes of healthy foods to families in limited-access areas.

In Kennedy’s case, family business, real estate, and feeding people tick a lot of boxes for the Sun in Cancer/Jupiter in Aries signature. He also had financial management, because he served as Treasurer for his Uncle Ted’s presidential campaign.[21]

Tennis pro René Lacoste (b. 1904) created and patented the first tubular steel tennis racquet. He also started the company that made Lacoste polo shirts, embroidered with a crocodile on the front.[22] Creating a merchandise business from a pro-sports career is a Sun in Cancer/Jupiter in Aries perfect serve.

One of the nicest things about this combination is that when Jupiter in Aries pushes Cancer to expand their familial sphere of influence, it’s often the socially disenfranchised who benefit from their sympathetic ways and desire to be helpful. When Cancer’s personal security is in order, they are free to set their sights on bigger political and social objectives, usually with only the noblest of intentions.

American author Pearl S. Buck (b. 1892) spent her early life living in China. She won the Pulitzer Prize for her novel The Good Earth that portrayed the Chinese peasants with affection and humanity. She co-founded the first international, interracial adoption agency, and opened orphanages for children left without parents after World War II. She worked to raise awareness of children born to Asian women but left behind by American soldiers. She also raised money to preserve her family home and turn it into a museum and cultural center.[23]

Helen Keller (b. 1880), the young subject of the well-known film The Miracle Worker had to fight her own body to become the heroic character in her story. As the first deaf-blind person to earn a Bachelor of Arts degree, she became a famous speaker who advocated worldwide for people with disabilities. In her later life, she spent most of her time raising money for the American Foundation for the Blind. [24]

Cancer is the sign of family and motherhood and Jupiter in Aries offers leadership and a competitive spirit.

If ambitious motherhood is a thing, Octomom Nadia Suleman (b. 1975) would fit. Nadia wanted to have a big family. With overachieving Jupiter in Aries, she has become well-known for being only the second woman in the United States to give birth to surviving octuplets. She ended up with fourteen children.[25]

Both Cancer and Aries are, at their core and in their own way, activists. It’s a potent combination and not always a docile one. Jupiter in Aries is feisty, while Cancer is sensitive and can become defensive on occasion. It seems like this combination creates more hurdles for its natives to overcome than some other combinations.

At the end of the day, though, for Sun in Cancer/Jupiter in Aries, it’s your heart that makes you special. You can be so very caring. Jupiter in Aries can get you outside of yourself in such a way that makes sharing your good heart easier.

Sun in Cancer/Jupiter in Aries partnerships formed with another person who has their Sun in a fire sign (Aries, Leo, or Sagittarius) and/or Jupiter in a water sign (Cancer, Scorpio, or Pisces) can prove to be a beneficial and prosperous combination.

    FIVE

Sun in Leo with Jupiter in Aries

Life isn’t about finding yourself. Life is about creating yourself.—George Bernard Shaw (b. 1856)

Leo has presence. A dignity of demeanor and awareness of self, that certain je ne sais quoi that draws the eyes of others. Leo is always aware of their surroundings and will be conscious of the effect they are having.

With Jupiter in Aries, Leo natives don’t just have a presence, they ARE a presence. An impossible-to-ignore presence.

And for this dramatic combination, the show must go on—in technicolor. Sun in Leo’s flair for showmanship and drama is amplified to the max with Jupiter in Aries’s bold expression. Under the big tent or in a soap opera, they claim center stage.

Whoever coined the term living large could have been talking about Sun in Leo/Jupiter in Aries. Diamond Jim Brady (b. 1856), a business tycoon during the gilded age, made his millions selling railroad supplies and got his nickname by adorning himself with his expensive diamonds and gemstone collection. He was flamboyant, ostentatious, and, according to Fortune magazine, the greatest capital goods salesman in American history. Brady was also a New York mainstay of Broadway nightlife.[26]

Bernie Cornfield (b. 1927), financier and international playboy, made his fortune in the mutual-fund industry. His marketing savvy quickly grew his fund business from small to several hundred million dollars. Questionable ethics aside, his success was fueled by his very popular advertising campaign with a lion strolling down Broadway in New York.[27]

The man with the perpetual tan, George Hamilton (b. 1939), launched the George Hamilton Skin and Sun Care Systems and tanning salons. Hamilton also has been quoted as saying he has dated at least four Miss World beauty queens.[28]

Yankees baseball bad boy Alex Rodriguez (b. 1975), nicknamed A-Rod, is known not only for his batting record and occasional scandal, but also for his reputation as a ladies’ man. He has reportedly dated Madonna, Kate Hudson, and Cameron Diaz, and is currently paired with Jennifer Lopez.[29]

I believe that it’s better to be looked over than it is to be overlooked.—Mae West

For provocative and risqué sex symbol Mae West (b. 1893), her notoriety is what kept her in the media. Her bawdy double entendres are what she is most remembered for, and her barrier-busting Jupiter in Aries was a constant nuisance for the censors. I believe in censorship. I made a fortune out of it. She had a long career and was a good businesswoman, amassing quite a fortune by the end of her life.[30]

Film director and producer Wes Craven (b. 1939) got his start in the porn industry and ended up being responsible for creating some of the most iconic horror films of our time, including A Nightmare on Elm Street and the Scream movies.[31]

Sun in Leo/Jupiter in Aries is one of a kind. A lover and a fighter.

Jupiter in Aries offers opportunities for individuation, and Sun in Leo’s gift is creative self-expression, leadership, and a generous spirit. Your path to opportunity is your uniqueness, and your lucky token is your ability to put yourself out there. The more authentically and generously you give of yourself, the richer your rewards.

Robin Williams (b. 1951) was one of a kind, which President Obama acknowledged in his eulogy. When Williams performed, he gave 200 percent. And when he died, the entire world mourned. He also gave generously of his time, doing many overseas tours to entertain the troops.

Lisa Kudrow (b. 1963) won recognition for her original quirky character Phoebe Buffay on the TV sitcom, Friends. Who doesn’t remember her signature song, Smelly Cat?

Whatever you are up to Sun in Leo/Jupiter in Aries, magic happens when you let your full diva freak fly.

Jupiter doesn’t require you to aspire to be famous, but your ticket to luck and opportunity is through Aries. You must take chances. Put yourself and your uniqueness out there and let the censors and the haters be damned.

Go ahead and make a fool of yourself. Drama is your signature; it’s hard to overdo it. There might be times in your life when you drive people crazy with some of your more interesting choices of hair color. But how would anyone else know if that hair color is going to be a trendsetter or not? You are probably the one who has the most accurate sense of your audience.

It’s your uniqueness that will sell. Really, who would have ever thought that Lisa Kudrow’s song Smelly Cat would become so iconic?

So be brave and say it like you mean it. If you are authentic, Jupiter will favor you.

And don’t take yourself too seriously. If you are enjoying you, everyone else will also.

Sun in Leo/Jupiter in Aries partnerships formed with another person who has their Sun and/or Jupiter in a fire sign (Aries, Leo, or Sagittarius) can prove to be a beneficial and prosperous combination.

    SIX

Sun in Virgo with Jupiter in Aries

Sun in Virgo with Jupiter in Aries is sharply observant, with an eye for detail. That’s just a fact. And keeping things real, facts are facts.

Sun in Virgo knows when those facts are correct because they have done the math—and checked it twice—so when something doesn’t add up, they know it, see it, and feel it. The symmetry is just off.

Along with that sense of symmetry are hair-trigger reflexes, like the kid who never broke a bone falling off of a bicycle. Not just because Virgo is careful, which they are, but their inner gyroscope is more finely tuned.

In fact, finely tuned is an apt description for a lot of things about Sun in Virgo/Jupiter in Aries, from their physical senses to their sense of humor. With a critical eye and discerning judgment, Virgo easily separates the wheat from the chaff. They know quality when they see it and are quick to point out the flaws.

There is also Virgo’s legendary work ethic. Virgo takes pride in a task done well. Whatever is worth doing at all, is worth doing well is a phrase coined by Virgo Sun and Mercury Philip Stanhope, 4th Earl of Chesterfield, back in 1746.

Jupiter in Aries doesn’t disagree with this premise. Where the two diverge, however, is their level of ambition. Aries wants to go big and be recognized for leadership, while Virgo is reserved and proud to serve.

What can, and often does, occur however, is that Sun in Virgo is the smartest in the room, and they do such exceptional work that they end up in the spotlight. They work the hardest and have earned the most respect for what they do.

Maybe quiet Virgo is a little bookish or a bit of a math whiz, but Jupiter in Aries can work with that—and sometimes with a pretty big impact.

So how much influence can analytical Sun in Virgo wield with authoritative Jupiter in Aries?

Retired Federal Supreme Court Justice David Souter (b. 1939) has this signature. He is a magna cum laude member of Phi Beta Kappa and a Rhodes Scholar.[32]

Economist and former Chairman of the Federal Reserve Paul Volcker (b. 1927) is one of the most influential economic thinkers and is credited with ending the high inflation in the US during the 1970s. Five American presidents relied on his financial acumen and integrity.[33]

Mary Shelly (b. 1797) authored the iconic novel Frankenstein spawning a new genre of science fiction and horror stories. Her father described her as singularly bold, somewhat imperious, and active of mind.[34]

Influential architect Louis Sullivan (b. 1856), called the father of modernism, is considered the creator of the modern skyscraper.[35]

And how much noise can scientist Sun in Virgo make with combustible Jupiter in Aries?

Brainiac physicist Arthur Compton (b. 1892) discovered the Compton Effect, a particle wave calculation important to astrophysics and the development of nuclear propulsion and radiological weapons. He was instrumental in developing the nuclear reactor and the plutonium bomb as part of the Manhattan project.[36]

And how much can observant Sun in Virgo make us laugh with intrepid Jupiter in Aries?

When Virgo’s critical eye turns humorous, the results are just plain funny. Nobody does satire better than Virgo, and with Jupiter in Aries as their agent, reserved Virgo often ends up center stage.

A celebrity is one who is known to many persons he is glad he doesn’t know.—Henry (H.L.) Mencken

Henry H.L. Mencken (b. 1880), the Sage of Baltimore, author, journalist, and social critic, is remembered for his reporting on the Scopes Trial, which he labeled the Monkey Trial. The name stuck. He was also a scholar of American English. His most well-known work is a multi-volume study called The American Language about how the English language is spoken in the United States.[37]

Lily Tomlin’s (b. 1939) collection of memorable wacky characters are cultural staples—We don’t care. We don’t have to. We’re the phone company.

For Sun in Virgo/Jupiter in Aries, the standards of integrity and work ethic are high. Jupiter in Aries challenges them to be somebody and Virgo doesn’t cut corners.

Althea Gibson (b. 1927) was the first black athlete to cross the color line of international tennis. Gibson’s road to success was challenging. Not only did her Virgo reflexes and work ethic ensure that she was, technically, one the best female tennis player ever, her Jupiter in Aries insisted that she refuse to back down during a time when racism and prejudice were widespread in sports and society. And Jupiter in Aries likes nothing better than a fight to be first.[38]

But oh, Sun in Virgo, you can be such a perfectionist, and Jupiter in Aries certainly does apply the pressure.

Sometimes I worry about being a success in a mediocre world. —Lily Tomlin

A pocket full of chill pills will serve you well. Maybe not literal pills, but Sun in Virgo/Jupiter in Aries needs a strategy to remind yourself to relax. When you are creating that Virgo specialty (your list of tasks), be sure to include one for taking a break—if you don’t, you could break.

One indicator that maybe it’s time to go to yoga class is if you find yourself snapping or barking at people. Other people make more mistakes than you do. It’s just the way it is. Being patient might seem like more than you can muster. But in the interest of not alienating your loved ones, do yourself a favor, put on your headphones, turn up the volume, and trot yourself off to class.

The work will wait. No one else is going to do it.

Sun in Virgo/Jupiter in Aries partnerships formed with another person who has their Sun in a fire sign (Aries, Leo, or Sagittarius) and/or Jupiter in an earth sign (Capricorn, Virgo, or Taurus) can prove to be a beneficial and prosperous combination.

    SEVEN

Sun in Libra with Jupiter in Aries

The art of getting along pretty much sums it up for you, Libra. Aesthetic, refined, social, conciliatory and, well, for the most part, mature. Interpersonal skills are your strength, and you thrive in situations where you get to exercise your talent for negotiating terms to mutual satisfaction.

And then you get stuck with Jupiter in Aries. That childish, churlish, self-absorbed, pushy, competitive, Jupiter in Aries is your publicity agent in life. Ugh! And you have to try to work with him to get things accomplished.

Well, what would life be without a challenge, right?

Jupiter in Aries pushes for individuation and competes for first place, Libra reaches for compromise and aspires to harmony. It’s not an easy space to negotiate and can result in a lack of clarity about what is or isn’t a good idea to do. Working alone doesn’t usually serve this signature well. Libra’s compass can go a little haywire with Jupiter in Aries’s impulse toward unilateral action.

On the other hand, Libra is an artistic sign, and Jupiter in Aries challenges Libra to break down barriers and taboos to confront existing norms. The results are often shocking, memorable, and transformative.

A lovely outcome of this particular dilemma is Olympic figure skater Brian Boitano (b. 1963). In his Olympic career, he was first known as a jumper. His Aries-Jupiter lead with strength and highly developed technical skills, but the jumping robot, as he was called, had difficulty winning top honors in Libra’s artistic categories. He solved this by collaborating, Libra-style, with a professional choreographer. The resulting programs accented his skills by incorporating artistic nuances that won him standing ovations from the audience and catapulted his career.[39]

The planet rulers of Libra and Aries, Venus, and Mars represent the male and female archetypes. If women are from Venus and men are from Mars, in this signature they are pitted against each other in lifelong strategic negotiation. When it’s good, the results can be transformative. When it’s bad, well, it can get quite tense.

At its best, it stimulates creativity and originality.

Carolee Schneemann (b. 1939) is an avant-garde artist who filmed herself having sex and she made art out of meat—long before Lady Gaga. A feminist, she describes her work as an investigation into the taboo realm of the liberating possibilities of the sexual female body, in opposition to the traditional representation of women as nude objects. She once gave an art history talk about Cézanne while wearing nothing but overalls with oranges stuffed everywhere. During the talk, she kept undressing and redressing, throwing oranges to the audience. She called it a still life escaping. Apparently, the audience was outraged.[40]

I really wish I had been there.

Emilio Pettoruti (b. 1892) was an Argentine artist during early twentieth century Buenos Aires. It was the beginning of an exciting time of cultural development and artistic growth in Argentina. Pettoruti initially caused a scandal with his avant-garde cubist exhibition in 1924, when his shocking modernism and futurism were not widely accepted by critics. But because of his unique style and vision, he is now remembered as one of the most influential of Argentina’s twentieth-century artists. Artist Luis Felipe Noa defined Pettoruti as a classicist of Modernism who was obsessed by order and harmony.[41]

Diplomacy and negotiation are also the domain of Libra.

Bob Geldof (b. 1951) rose to prominence as the lead singer of the Irish punk rock band, the Boomtown Rats. Punk seems like a perfect Aries’s dissonant contribution to Libra’s musical stylings. His political activism and international charity work fit well with Libra’s diplomatic skills. Geldof’s Jupiter in Aries drive fueled his efforts to raise money for famine relief in Ethiopia through the Live Aid concert, the first event of its kind. His involvement in numerous other charities earned him an honorary knighthood and a nomination for the Nobel Peace Prize. On the other hand, his Aries petulant outbursts of temper, verbal assaults, and swearing make him colorful and controversial, and that behavior succeeded in seriously spiking the Live Aid donation rate.[42]

Baseball Hall of Famer Dave Winfield (b. 1951) spent part of his career with the NY Yankees in a public feud with owner, George Steinbrenner, because of a misunderstanding over the value of his contract. Steinbrenner, supposedly by accident, signed a ten-year $23-million-dollar contract instead of the $15 million he said he intended, making Winfield the highest paid player in baseball.[43]

A negotiating coup for intrepid for Sun in Libra/Jupiter in Aries.

Winfield also got himself in trouble with the fans when he threw a ball at a seagull and killed it during a game.[44]

Novelist and playwright Graham Greene (b. 1904) gained serious literary acclaim and widespread popularity for his works that explore the ambivalent moral and political issues of the modern world. He was also bipolar, which he stated was profoundly antagonistic to his domestic life, but also the source of much of his writing.[45]

For you, Sun in Libra/Jupiter in Aries, this signature is not always the easiest to manage. Finding that balance between yourself and others is trickier for you than most other Sun in Libras. But the path to luck and opportunity is through Jupiter, so being unapologetic about presenting your unique vision is necessary.

For artistic and creative pursuits, Jupiter in Aries might provide the originality that propels you to greatness. Interpersonally, it is more challenging. Good judgment requires maturity, and begging forgiveness instead of asking permission might not work out well. Getting a second opinion before striking out on your own can save you much trouble.

Unfortunately, it’s advice too late for Daniel Pearl (b. 1963), the Jewish journalist who fell into the clutches of Al-Qaeda in Pakistan and was beheaded. Aries does rule the head.

Sun in Libra/Jupiter in Aries partnerships formed with another person who has their Sun in a fire sign (Aries, Leo, or Sagittarius) and/or Jupiter in an air sign (Libra, Aquarius, or Gemini) can prove to be a beneficial and prosperous combination.

    EIGHT

Sun in Scorpio with Jupiter in Aries

Scorpio power resides with your indomitable spirit. It’s the sign that is most able to regenerate itself, mercilessly cut away festering sores, surmount difficulties, and rise above frailties to create a more abundant life.

"Life is real, life is earnest,

And the grave is not its goal.

Dust thou art to dust returnest

Was not spoken of the soul."

    —William Cullen Bryan.

Huh? What that heck does that mean? It means that if anyone can come back from the dead, Scorpio, you can. You are, perhaps, the most powerful of all the signs in the entire zodiac, and your strength comes from connection to spirit.

Aries is no slouch either. Fearless, self-assured, and competitive, Jupiter’s push for opportunity in Aries is to be first in show. And it’s a very determined push.

It’s a fire and water combination with both signs ruled by combative Mars. Both are emotionally intense
