Foreword
In 1839, a German apothecary named Eduard Simon accidentally invented the very first plastic - polystyrene. Over the next 150 years this accident would lead to a revolution in how humans consume across the world.
The first disposable nappies were brought onto the market in the mid-twentieth century, primarily as a product for convenience. (Because washing nappies was more time consuming than throwing them away.) But where once their absorbent cores were made from natural fibres, disposable nappies now contain polymers to keep babies dry, whilst a mix of chemicals will show parents when a nappy is wet, all held together using thermoplastic adhesives.
Unfortunately this so-called convenience comes at a cost: disposable nappies cost parents more in the long run, authorities have to deal with waste costs and it costs our planet too. All that plastic has to go somewhere and now we are seeing the true cost of our reliance on it.
Nearly three billion nappies are being thrown away just in the UK every year. To say we have a problem is an understatement. The Nappy Alliance believes that parents should be given more information about reusable nappies, empowering them to make an informed choice about the products that they choose to use.
As a coalition of independent providers of reusable nappies, the Nappy Alliance exists to promote the economic and environmental benefits of reusable nappies and continues to promote greater consumer choice for parents.
Since 2003 the Nappy Alliance has made significant progress to create a growing market of environmentally friendly products. Now all major supermarkets are stockists and we have seen 30% of parents opting to use them at some stage.
However, the Alliance does not seek a ban on the use of disposable nappies. We fully understand that for many new parents and carers they are a very helpful product and an essential part of managing busy lives. But we believe that governments are right to look at reducing reliance on disposable nappies, along with other single-use plastics, to battle the climate crisis.
As awareness rises over the impact single-use plastics are having on the planet, we have seen more parents begin to make a stand against them. Parents like Laura.
The Joy of Reusable Nappies provides another stepping stone towards making reusable nappies mainstream once again. New parents can rely on Laura’s authentic voice and approachable writing to support their journey and dispel the myth that cloth nappies are difficult. (They are not.)
Whether you are considering switching from disposables to reusables, or are expecting your first child and preparing for their arrival, this book will walk you through all you need to know to get going with reusable nappies. Based on the ten biggest questions new parents face when starting out, The Joy of Reusable Nappies provides pragmatic and honest advice in a simple, relatable style. Laura offers a practical grounding in the use and care of reusable nappies in a style imbued with optimism and hope: hope of a positive future for the planet and parents everywhere.
