Endorsements
Kathleen Ellis’s gripping account is a heroine’s journey, a personal struggle against great odds. It will help anyone face life’s challenges with greater courage, strength, and wisdom.
~ Larry Dossey, MD, Author: Healing Words
and The Power of Premonitions
While science has been quite adept at adequately documenting studies and results of unconscious cellular memory in many different medical and psychological settings, society in general has not been as graciously awarded experiential testimony as powerful and poignant as Kathleen’s story. Bringing scientific knowledge into the mainstream and allowing us to see that even the darkest of times can be healed is quite extraordinary and Kathleen has eloquently captured the essence of that triumph in The Darkness Cannot Keep Us – Choosing a Better Tomorrow.

"Kathleen Ellis writes a compelling, moody memoir of
human sadness, of hard luck that originated literally in the embryonic state. As she describes, her life began in the womb of a woman overburdened with the ravages of child bearing and a father who didn’t seem to care. All of this makes for an immense feeling of gratitude just to have experienced early love and nurturing. It also confirms hidden suspicions of a greater power at work. Ellis seems to say that the human life cycle, like the moon and tides, begins and perhaps ends in a little-understood, but over-riding influence the critically susceptible mind. The Darkness Cannot Keep Us helps define what we long to express . . . that the origins of memory, even ancient memory, guide our choices and often our lives.

Acknowledgment
My greatest thanks goes to God for always being there for me even when I have been unable or unwilling to feel, acknowledge, or listen. I am always grateful for His presence, patience, love, grace and forgiveness. Even before I knew of His existence, He was there for me always, in all ways.
To my husband Tom, my best friend, companion, lover, confidante and soul mate, you have shown me love that I never knew was possible or even existed. I am eternally grateful for you and the love you have given me. God knew what I needed when he brought you into my life. Thank you for teaching me that I am courageous and strong, for helping me to believe in myself and to trust my instincts, and for encouraging my growth to find my inner strength; for helping me to discover who I truly am. You have always believed in me. You have been my greatest blessing through this journey, and are always the wind beneath my wings. Thank you for always being there for me so I could grow and become the person I am today. I love you more than words can say.
To my sons, Michael and Scott, and my step-children Dawna, Tom Jr. and Linda, who have taught me so much about myself; how to give love, how to have patience. More importantly, thank you for the beautiful grandchildren and great grandchild I adore and love. I learn from you each and every day. My love for you cannot be measured.
To my special parents
, Arthur and Carol Quance, who have brought me so much joy, I can’t begin to describe it here. Without your example, I’m not sure where I would be today. Words simply cannot express the gratitude I feel in my heart for both of you. My love for you is boundless!
To my Reiki Masters Lynelle Backstrom, Lynette Butcher, Marjorie Nellis and Ken Dyer, Sr. who all brought me to the awareness of boundless energy and the gifts I have within me to move forward with my own healing and my contributions to the world. Namasté.
To Arthur Quance, Ken Saunders, Bruce and Judy Robinson, Melinda Ely, Jenette St. George, and Vicki Deg who all dedicated their time and talents to helping me with the editing and critique of this book. Your feedback, support and encouragement are a true blessing to me. To Richard Heinzen for my beautiful author photo. Dr. Louisa Lavy, MD, thank you from the bottom of my heart for acknowledging so openly what I suspected to be true with my health issues. Your honesty, transparency and willingness to discuss the issues of my health as it relates to the subject matter here could not be more appreciated. The resources you have provided to me have been invaluable to my research for this book.
Dedication
The writing of this book is to honor my mother, Ruth Bernice Marlett and grandmother, Ruth Hanna Magnuson for their indomitable spirit and incredible inner strength. I could never have found the courage and insight to come to such immutable truths without the gifts you have both passed on to me.
May my brothers and sisters know how truly strong you really are. You have each taken incredibly courageous journeys of your own and I am so proud of all of you.
Without the blessings of my adoptive aunt Blanche Gamet finding my birth mother I would not be here today. I can never repay you for the efforts you bestowed on my behalf. May you rest in peace knowing you have given the greatest gift that life can offer another, the gift of giving to another of yourself.
To My Readers
THIS IS MY STORY. While others in my life may have different opinions about the sequence of events, I have strived to tell my personal journey in my own way based upon my own memories and beliefs. While I understand you may have differing opinions than mine, I hope you will stay open to possibilities.
This is an experiential journey, not a fix-it book. I am not a doctor and have no medical degrees. I have spent my adult life striving to become accountable for my own health and well-being. Suggestions and experiences, I share in my book are not to be construed as a substitute for proper medical care. Your personal health is a matter between you and your medical professionals. This book is intended to help you think about the possibilities and to investigate them further for yourself.
Preface
The majority of my adult life was spent pondering the Why am I here?
of life. I have an insatiable fascination with science, and grew up with no spiritual or religious exposure of any kind.
The primary reason I chose to write this book is based upon what I have discovered scientifically and spiritually through my own life of researching and reading. I suppose that may seem odd to some, but my personal experience has shown me that science and spirituality are not mutually exclusive. While both science and spirituality are equally complex in their own right, they are also complementary to each other and share more common ground than we realize.
Our human nature is to form opinions and points of view about our exposure to each, based upon a limited context or teaching from others which sometimes insist that there is only one view of life. Today, more than ever, all of us are looking to find the connection that will help us tie our lives together in a more meaningful way. We are looking for something that takes us to the next level; something that will help us to stop wondering Is this all there is?
There is a broader perspective of life. I would like to encourage you to stay open to the possibility that there is more to life than what we currently understand to be true, and that your future is dependent solely upon your choices.
The prospect that we understand and respect the teachings of the ages, yet also be open to contemplate how our science and spirituality working together can bring us the greatest gifts that life can offer, and help us make the good choices in life.
Human beings are the sum of so much science that the human body is by far one of the most magnificent complex creations that will ever exist in the universe. That said I believe that everything in life is of a spiritual nature. I have had too many miracles happen in my own life to believe otherwise.
I believe that what is written about in these pages is supported by the Holy Bible scriptures, and most other major texts of faith and science around the world. Yes, I said science!
Each of us begins our journey with a greater source than just being born into a random senseless world. If the term God does not suit your belief system, then please feel free to use the term universe, or higher power, whichever mechanism you normally use to help shape your life.
Our responsibility with that greatest source of power is to become the best and highest individual that we can become in this short life given to us. The greatest gift we have been given besides life itself is the power of choice. I do not believe that our life is already preordained and we are left to just live it out until we die. How do you think
