About this ebook

About the book
This book of poetry is a reflection of life; my life. The parts that are festive and the parts that are not so festive. I wanted the readers to capture that about my writings. The important part about this project was that I was able to candidly show my flaws. It was important for me to let the readers

    I met her

    Orleans Parish

    Josephine Street

    1971 while walking

    Up the street headed

    To the corner store

    For a cold drink

    Preparing to catch the bus

    Cross the river to Algiers

    Her name was Pearl Anne

    Last name Glapion

I was taken aback by her hourglass

    Shape and her dark skin

    Which she cleaned gently

    With Noxzema before bed

    She became my everything

    In that moment and thereafter

We were free to be us

    Lovers of love

    Gentle on our minds

    Pearl Anne cooked and turned

    The darkest moments to sunshine

We rode the trolleys up and down

    Canal Street while cooling off

With cold cups we got for a nickel

Over at the sweet shop ran

By Miss Erma on Ursuline who usually

Sold the hot suppers on Friday’s

    We loved each other

    Every day was us together

    Being one shadow

    Living in one time

    Moments were endless

    Even as I stood over

Her grave as she no longer

Could fight the battles of illness

    That lined her breast

    I loved her still

    My everything

Like the moment we first met

    Orleans Parish

    Josephine Street

    1971

    A Man In Danger

I have loved a lot of faces

And the love is all the same

I have raced in many races

But I never won a game

Never had a taste for honey

    But vinegar is my thing

More in love with the money

Some say that it’s a shame

    I’m a man in danger

    But danger is funny

Living the way that I do

    Just a man in danger

    Danger of loving

I live with so much attitude

In silence I want to holler

I’ve been called a devilish man

Try to buy me with your dollar

Yet I’m back in escrow again

It’s just a valor of honor

I’m just a lover of pain

In hell I have a condo

    Lucifer knows my name

    I’m a man in danger

    But danger is funny

Living the way that I do

    Just a man in danger

    Danger of loving

I live with so much attitude

    A man in danger

    Just call me quite cunning

    Happy with just being blue

    I’m a man in danger

    But danger is funny

Living the way that I do

    Just a man in danger

    Danger of loving

I live with so much attitude

    A Slave Story

    Just like those lashings

    My brother Solomon

Took for no reason at all

    I am beat beyond

How much longer before I can dance on the

    Heels of the north star

Solomon promised me that one day a better life

Would be for us both but he never made it

Took his own life one day

    Out back behind the shed

Took Big Man’s riffle and let off one shot to his temple

    Momma was numb and

I was scared to wonder if I was next because the lashings

Were worse than forever burning in hell

    Lord knows I’m beat

    Feeling old and withered

Wondering If there is a God

How could he let this be

How could he love them and not us

Momma and Solomon was all I had

Come one Sunday Momma didn’t wake up

Lola said she died in her sleep

That’s how come she knew Momma was an angel

She had the biggest smile on her face as she laid peacefully

I’m sure she was with Solomon now

Running peacefully and carrying a smile

    As long as the Mississippi

Now the lashings are coming more frequent

Almost every time the sun rises

My skin just falls off my back

    I’m pained

Can barely open my mind to believe

That there is a better life

Maybe the north start ain’t nothing but

A fairytale passed on down to my kind

Maybe Big Man and all his people planted

That seed in the ears of everyone that

Worked the fields just so that they can catch

One of us trying to chase an illusion one night

    Momma and Solomon are gone

    Lord I tell you

I may as well be gone too

    A Slave’s Dream

I’m gonna run on away from here

    Goodbye

I’m gonna live on with no fear

    So long

I’m gonna follow the North Star

Until I can get along so far

    Until strange
