    Introduction

    Cats have always featured prominently in our mini family, consisting then of Becky, my youngest daughter, Sara her older sister and me, a struggling single mother. We acquired our first cat Charly in Lismore, in rural Australia, a tiger cat, who later, when moving back to Sydney, became our valiant knight and protector. He took his role very seriously and fought off brown snakes (a nest in our garden), wild tomcats coming in at night from the adjacent bush and even dogs, who considered our then unfenced property free for all – until they met Charly!!

    Charly was strictly Sara's cat but cats choose their own favourites and so he spent much time on Bec's lap, while she was doing her homework in her room.

    Along came Annie, whom the then teenage girls called Annie Bunny, Anybody, Annbun for short or, if lucky, Annie! She was a little cute, longsuffering, black and white, very soft and cuddly lamb of a cat. So much so, the girls used to carry her wrapped around their necks, like in the picture of Jesus the Shepherd, carrying the lost lamb.

    Both cats have now long gone, buried in separate plots in our garden, where they loved to sun themselves, especially in the mild winter's sun.
