    Foreword

Chronic illness has become an epidemic in our world today. As a natural health care provider for over 30 years, I have assisted thousands of individuals in transforming their lives and finally breaking free from the pain and frustration of suffering with chronic illness. Over the years, I have noticed the number of individuals who have one or more chronic illnesses has increased at an alarming rate, especially over the past few decades.

Many of my patients, especially women, tend to be caregivers for clients, children or elders. They feel worn out, yet fail to realize the degree to which taking care of everyone else negatively affects their own health. These are the people that Dr. Michelle Gamble refers to as Atlas caregivers.

As advocates of natural health, they do not like to use medications and prefer to take care of their health issues themselves. Many are distrustful of doctors and pharmaceutical companies. These individuals have been dealing with chronic illness for years and are frustrated with conventional medicine. They have done a lot of research on their own but still struggle with incomplete healing - getting a little better yet still not feeling quite whole.

Perhaps you, like these dedicated and determined individuals, are looking for a better way. Perhaps you too are tired of trying supplement after supplement, confused as a result of following 50 million experts and trying to wade through the overwhelm of too much conflicting information, and are yearning to discover the key to vitality in your particular case.

My approach in serving the needs of my patients has led me to a deep appreciation of the need to address the emotional, spiritual, and mental components to chronic illness in order to guide them to wellness.

In Creating a Happier, Healthier You, Dr. Gamble reveals this vital key to healing that has been buried over the course of the past century due to the dominant culture of pharmaceutical drugs that promise a magical pill for every ill. By focusing on disease, rather than balance, our current medical system has lost touch with the importance of addressing for the whole being - body, mind, heart, and soul - and has thus radically underestimated the innate power of each individual to transform and restore his or her own health.

Dr. Gamble takes a holistic approach to healing. She focuses on how to build the body, mind, heart, and soul, rather than fixating on fighting a particular disease.

As her mentor, I have seen Dr. Michelle Gamble guide many people on their personal healing journeys, so they could finally break free from the pain and frustration of suffering with a chronic illness. She has done this by integrating the ancient wisdom of traditional cultures with the scientific research of modern functional medicine.

By teaching her students to listen more deeply to the signs and messages revealed in their symptoms, she guides them to a deeper understanding and appreciation of what lies at the root of their pain or disease, and what needs to be done to restore vitality and vibrant health. Her approach achieves results, even for those who have spent countless years and many thousands of dollars on unsuccessful interventions.

In Creating a Happier, Healthier You, her latest book, she opens the door to all she has learned over her 17 years of clinical experience and 25 years as a professional educator, to provide a holistic approach to exploring the real root causes of illness – the ones that have been misunderstood or ignored by both the medical and alternative health communities.

Dr. Michelle Gamble boldly proclaims three simple, yet controversial truths that empower us all: You are your own divine physician. No one can heal you but you. Holistic healing must address the wounds of the body, mind, heart, and soul.

I invite you to join her on the journey to Create a Happier, Healthier You.

    Introduction

You are my last hope. I do not know what else to do, where else to go said the young mother through a veil of tears as she sat in front of me wringing her hands in desperation. I quietly got up to get some tissues and placed the box on the table before her. Ann continued to share with me the story of her young daughter who was suffering from chronic digestive disorders. She had gone to countless medical doctors and viewed numerous videos, webinars and other online trainings via Dr. Google in an effort to find relief for her little girl. Then, she started talking about the turmoil in her own personal life ranging from fears about job security, a rocky intimate relationship, and her own health challenges. After about 15 minutes of monologue, she stopped to catch her breath, looked at me and apologized for rambling. I assured her that there was nothing to apologize for. Indeed, sharing her story was an essential first step in the healing process.

For over 15 years, I have worked with men and women just like Ann. Their names change, but the story is generally the same. You may find this hard to believe, but I myself have a story that is similar to Ann’s. With my Doctoral degree in Naturology, the study of nature’s cures, as well as advanced training in Functional Endocrinology and Blood Chemistry, I have become very adept at helping people, young and old, from all walks of life, to feel better. During the first 5 years of being an alternative natural health care provider, I found myself doing the same as my conventional, drug pushing medical counterparts: recommending a pill for every ill. The only difference was that the pills I promoted were natural herbs and supplements.

Around 2007, I had a particularly challenging case with an elder gentleman. Over the years, he had become a dream client in terms of compliance. Anything I asked Henry to take or eat, he did, with no resistance nor hesitation. His chronic conditions of diabetes, hypertension, and blood clotting improved, but after a while, he seemed to hit a glass ceiling with my program. One day as I reflected on his case, I recalled him telling me of the death of his marriage several years before. I pulled out his file and realized that his seemingly unending lists of chronic symptoms started around or shortly after that event. Studies such as the ACE study¹ help us to understand the tremendous impact trauma, all forms of intense depleting personal experiences, mental, physical, emotional, and spiritual, have on the overall well being of a person. Indeed, more recent research point to the correlation between chronic illness and unresolved trauma that has an ongoing reverberating disease-promoting effect on an individual. In this book, you will learn how to assess the degree to which seemingly unrelated life experiences have had and may even continue to have a detrimental impact on your health. My clinical experiences have taught me not to underestimate the value of the lifestyle component of the diet and lifestyle approach commonly touted by many health proponents. Unfortunately, like the earlier version of me, most do little more than scratch the surface in this critical area.

As I pondered Henry’s situation more deeply, I came to the unfortunate conclusion that his story was not the anomaly, and I myself had experienced the glass ceiling with my own chronic digestive health concerns. Thanks to Henry, I started to place a lot more emphasis on developing a truly holistic healing approach to health. Although I had always acknowledged the importance of mental, emotional, and spiritual wellbeing in working with my clients, I usually shied away from actually DOING anything to addresses the imbalances in those areas. Wilbert, my husband at the time, warned me not to go into those forbidden territories because I was not a pastor, therapists, nor mental health counselor. Although my credentials have not changed, I realize that a doctor in the true original meaning of the word is just an educator, one who leads out of the individual that which is already there. I resolved at that moment to commit myself to learn ways to support my students in healing all aspects of their being and not merely managing their physical symptoms.

In the many years that followed, I have delved deep into my studies of various spiritual traditions from around the world to develop a system called HeartSong to help people address emotional/spiritual areas of dis-ease. I became certified as HeartMath coach/mentor/provider to learn how to teach people how to use the strategies and biofeedback tools developed by the HeartMath Institute² to bring themselves into coherence and thus enabling the individual the ability to physical/mental/emotional imbalances. More recently, I completed my training in Strategic Interventions with the Robbins-Madanes program. Under the tutelage of Tony Robbins and Cloe Madanes, I learned how to address the six basic needs of all people in order to make the critical shifts in mindset to bring about the essential behavior changes that are necessary for the journey to heal from chronic illness.

As a non-medical, Holistic Healing Doctor, I focus on helping people to embrace all aspects of healing: body, mind, heart, and spirit. I emphasize the therapeutic relationship between incorporating all forms of therapy, both conventional and what we term alternative. I help people like Ann and Henry, who are unconsciously sacrificing their
