    INTRODUCTION

During the course of our daily life, we very seldom get time to think what life in this world is about. When we were young, it is all about the family, friends and school. As we become adults, it is about building a career, getting married and starting a family. Once we become husband, wife, father or mother, it is about family responsibilities and making a living. The social life, the community life and religious life help us move forward without thinking what life is all about. When we get older, we see that many of the popular leaders, philosophers, scientists, technocrats, actors, artists, teachers and some contemporaries leave this world and become memories. Our ambition to reach some place, to become popular or to make money has a damper when we get old. At this time, we think back and try to analyze life as we experienced, think about what we could or could not do have done, what we did or did not do, what would or would not have happened, missed opportunities, did not use the opportunity to help others, failed to show love, got into argument unnecessarily, developed jealousy and hatred for no reason, all these feelings go through our mind. Come to think of it, none of these have any meaning when we get old, because it is too late now. Yesterday was history. Now, can you predict what is going to happen tomorrow? No. Tomorrow is mystery. You have only today. Do it now; today is your gift. I want to open this gift, find what is in it for today and explore the universe and the life. Join my exploration and let us see where we reach and what we find out.

What is life? Where did it all start? Is human being the only super intelligent animal who lived on earth? Is there life in any other planet in the universe? The answer to all our questions came from human exploration and scientific research. We now have answers to many questions that were unknown before. Do us have answers to all unknowns? No. Astronomers, scientists and explorers are still in pursuit of finding the truth about universe and life. Only humans can find the answers—no other living creature on earth can provide the answers. Let us explore and see where we reach.

Human beings consider life as the most important in this world. Let us find out whether it is true. We know that all forms of life do not sustain in the world, human, animal reptiles, birds, fish or plant. Is there a special meaning for human life?

    Chapter 1

    Human Kaleidoscope

Ever since human beings started thinking, there was an urge from the very beginning to define the mysteries of life, explore the unknown and determine where it all started. From Caveman to Neanderthal man to the twenty-first century high tech human race, the search continues. Gods were created and idols were made as different images of God. There were several manifestations and many images of God. God was defined in many ways by various religions. Finally, it was established by religions that God is the creator of everything and worships God as the ultimate power. For many old religions like Hinduism and Judaism, the God loves as well as punishes. Modern religions like Christianity, Islam etc. redefined God as the loving and merciful God. Religions have become part of human life and culture. Religions also have become the instigator of fighting between people and nations. Fundamental religious leaders have become haters rather than people with love and compassion.

World is a big prism, seven continents, 190 countries, 700 languages and an equal number of ethnic communities. It is impossible for us to imagine and to even see all these peoples of the World, or learn their culture and ethnicity. Each ethnic culture is very unique. Each ethnic people have unique habits. I have made an attempt to study some of these cultures, ethnic groups, the food habits and other traditions by traveling through many countries. I decided to study more about the culture, food and traditions of the people of various ethnic groups. Sometimes my analyses may not be true or agreeable to you. I can speak about the ethnic culture in Kerala State, India, where I was born and brought up and about the people of United States of America, where I spent the last 44 years of my life here.

Culture is a particular form of civilization, which reflects the beliefs, customs, acts and institution of a society at a given time. A specific group of peoples are persons living under one government in the same country. Ethnic people are a group of persons, who share a common culture, language and inherited conditions of life.

Language plays a major role in the development of an ethnic culture, in addition to location, region, country, continent, weather conditions, geography etc. Even people who speak the same language have different culture, again based on which region or part of the World or which part of a country they live. Language and Culture are amazing phenomena that influence the people in a particular area, especially in developing an ethnic society. Religion also plays a role in developing culture and ethnicity. Language is developed by human beings as a means of communication. Initially they were sound bites, which later created names for everything. Any name or word used is created though sound bites and later became permanent words specifying names, verbs, etc. for a full communication. People who live in a certain area or region create the same sound bites, which turned into a language. Thus, language became part of the culture of communication. Each language later created alphabets and also grammar. Alphabets in most cases are a reflection of the culture unless they are borrowed from another language. Grammar of the language is definitely influenced by the culture of the people. Language also is shaped by the way we think and each culture has different ways of thinking. In some languages, there are no tenses for past, present and future.

Thinking process of people may be the same. However, each culture can develop a different way of thinking. Talking different languages does not mean that they are communicating differently. Culture definitely influences the pattern of the language or how it is structured.

The law of the land, the religions that people follow in the area, social norms, traditions, and language influence the culture creating different ethnic groups within one society. They were called tribal cultures. In the modern worlds there is no tribal culture even though there are tribal people in underdeveloped areas of the World. Tribal societies were often formed to protect their culture, property and belongings from outside attacks. These tribal cultures later evolved into ethnic
