Francesca Hepton

Francesca Hepton was born on the tropical island of Hawaii in 1973 and has traveled the world. She has an MA in Modern Literature from the University of St Andrews and runs her own publishing business. In her spare time she has created the world of Kiki the Kung Fu Kitten for both younger and older children. The series includes 4 other titles for 7 to 11-year-olds. She took up the study of Martial Arts late in life. She has found that learning techniques such as Wing Chun in fact takes away the desire for any violence and brings self-confidence and balance. These are wonderful qualities to share with our younger generation. Each story in the Kiki series has a moral message about self-belief, courage, determination, loyalty, truthfulness, anti-bullying, how being small or different doesn't matter. If you believe you can achieve, you achieve.

    Banjo’s Got a Girlfriend!

One summer’s morning, Kiki was sunning herself in her favourite spot on the windowsill. Banjo came past thinking she had not noticed him.

He tiptoed to the back door in the kitchen. Kiki peered at him through half-closed eyes. He had an odd look about him.

Where would he be sneaking off to at this time of the morning? she thought to herself. Where are you off to, Banjo? Looks like you’re up to no good.

Banjo stopped dead in his tracks and turned bright red.

Uh, nowhere, just outside to enjoy the lovely fresh air.

Kiki knew he wasn’t telling the truth. She noticed his fur was gelled back as if he had wet it and - Oh my god! He’d even combed it!

What have you done to your fur? It’s all flat!

Um, nothing, just put a bit too much spit in it this morning, I guess.

Banjo seemed to want this conversation over with, but he was not in luck.

Dali turned up right at that moment. Dali, the resident mouse artist, had an incredibly long thin black moustache and wore a red neckerchief. Red meant he was in a particularly funny, happy mood. He wore his yellow one for more serious days and his black one when, well, you just avoided him then, because it meant he was in a terribly bad mood.

He swished into the kitchen with a paintbrush in his hand ready to take up his position behind the easel in the garden. He stopped in shock when he heard Banjo say that he had put too much spit in his fur.

A bit too much spit! he said twirling the ends of his jet-black moustache. You told me to put on more, more, more. Spit, spit, spit. More, more, more, spit, spit, spit.

    You did what? Kiki asked.

I combed and styled his thick fat matted hair to make him look good for a lady friend.

    Kiki’s eyebrows shot up.

A lady friend! Kiki stood up alert. I didn’t know you had a lady friend!

I didn’t, do, don’t, it was Dali who said I did. I don’t know what he is talking about, Banjo said.

Don’t know what I am talking about! Dali rose up to his full height of ten centimetres, tied on his black neckerchief, put his paws on his hips and began shaking his little fist at Banjo.

"How I have slaved this morning for hours to get through that jungle you
