Francesca Hepton

Francesca Hepton was born on the tropical island of Hawaii in 1973 and has traveled the world. She has an MA in Modern Literature from the University of St Andrews and runs her own publishing business. In her spare time she has created the world of Kiki the Kung Fu Kitten for both younger and older children. The series includes 4 other titles for 7 to 11-year-olds. She took up the study of Martial Arts late in life. She has found that learning techniques such as Wing Chun in fact takes away the desire for any violence and brings self-confidence and balance. These are wonderful qualities to share with our younger generation. Each story in the Kiki series has a moral message about self-belief, courage, determination, loyalty, truthfulness, anti-bullying, how being small or different doesn't matter. If you believe you can achieve, you achieve.

    A Grey Day

IT WAS A GREY MORNING on the 5th of November. The rain was splashing against the lounge window. Kiki was on the windowsill. Her breath was steaming up the pane of glass. Banjo kept drawing smiley faces on it before the steam disappeared.

Squeak, squeak, squeak went his podgy finger across the steamed-up windowpane.

Kiki was watching the Major outside.

She wasn’t sure what his real name was, but he looked like a Major, so they just called him the Major.

He was a creamy coloured cat with black paws and a pudgy black face. He was sitting out in the rain looking miserable. He always looked miserable no matter the weather – hot, cold, sunny or raining. He would spend his entire day crossing from one side of the street to the other.

Why do you suppose he does that? asked Kiki.

Who? Does what? Banjo was busy drawing on the steamy window. This time he was drawing noughts and crosses in the steam made by Kiki’s breath. He wanted to see if he could have a whole game against himself before the steam disappeared.

The Major, said Kiki. Why do you think he looks so miserable and just walks from one side of the street to the other side back and forth, back and forth all day, every day?

Oh, I don’t know, maybe it’s because he’s old, replied Banjo.

Just because he’s old doesn’t mean he has to be miserable. Do you think he has a home? asked Kiki.

Oh Kiki, really? I’d almost finished that one, said Banjo frustrated because she’ d looked away from the window and made his noughts and crosses disappear. "You’ve ruined my game of noughts and crosses with
