DAVID
GAIA, ENG-LAND, WEMBLEY CITY, 1761 A.Z.
(After Zero Year)
DAVID PRESLEY was no rock and roll star. The closest thing the 42-year-old had got to stardom was singing in the shower or miming along to music videos. David was a job-seeker. His savings were at an all-time low and he was desperate to find work. Forced to sign on at the local benefit office for more than a year, he knew that any job would soon have to do.
Even for such a highly educated man, when push came to shove (and it had), he had to man up and take whatever was available. Having sent off an application to the Sinnquist Company via the Hounslow Job-Shop a few hours ago, he wasn’t feeling hopeful. He had a desk-drawer full of letters that told him he was overqualified, or didn’t have enough experience.
It was Friday and David had nothing else he wanted to do, so he reckoned a little on-line browsing/shopping session couldn’t hurt. It did. He’d spotted a couple of steel-book movies he couldn’t pass up on. He added them to his basket, then used his already over-stretched credit card to complete checkout. For the remainder of the afternoon he watched classic rock videos. That was until the phone rang. David ran his hands through his scruffy blonde black hair and after four rings, jumped forward to answer it.
Hello?
Good afternoon, would it be possible to speak with Mr Presley?
A woman? Wonder who she is, thought David, then said, This is he,
as attentively as he could, before yawning.
Mr Presley, this is Candice Lane from the Sinnquist Company. Would this be a good time to discuss your application?
David sat up straight and rubbed his eyes with his spare hand. He couldn’t believe it.
Yes, now is good. It’s perfect.
Your qualifications don’t seem to justify your application for the Night-time Cleaning Operative position.
I don’t understand,
said David, Are you suggesting I’m over-qualified?
No offence intended, but why have you applied for this role?
David didn’t know what to say and decided against telling Candice the whole truth.
I have applied for other positions, in my field of expertise, but I really need to do something, now, to support my family.
I understand,
said Candice, who then asked, Would it be possible for you to attend an interview with Mr Roquefort this evening at say, half past five?
David gulped, then answered, Definitely. I’ll be there.
I’ll email you the address details on your confirmation letter and look forward to seeing you this evening.
Thank you,
said David, Bye.
David put the phone down and couldn’t believe his luck. He’d finally scored and been invited for an interview. Sure, it was for a cleaning position, but that didn’t matter. The pay was minimum wage and that alone would bring him £15.50 an hour. The world might not be the same place it was twenty years ago, but in Eng-land, it was still better than most places he’d heard of.
The Cube Continent in the South was a far stranger land and David was glad he wasn’t living there. He had been tempted to find work in the United States of the Delta Continent, but those people preferred to hire their own. That’s how their economy was one of the planet’s strongest. Almost everyone there had a job, especially the scientists. David wished he’d been a scientist. They always got into the Delta Continent. Wizards were next, but lowly common-folk hardly ever. Guess they had plenty of their own for want of more.
Shit, thought David, It’s Friday.
