A Hidden Rumspringa - Sarah Amberson
SARAH AMBERSON
David placed his boot on the ground carefully, wincing as a loud crunch broke the silence that had previously dominated the night.
Shhh,
his best friend Charlie whispered, his finger jammed up against his lips.
David rolled his eyes. Charlie always thought he knew best and he knew exactly what was going on. If anyone was better at sneaking around between the two of them, it was David, hands down.
He knew all the best routes. He was the one who had a hidden cellphone so they would know when the parties were.
Rumspringa was one of the most coveted times for young folk in the Amish community. David felt like he’d been ready since thirteen. Some of the younger kids who were on rumspringa were only fourteen, and yet his parents insisted he wait until the last moment possible.
He was already sixteen, but they had insisted he wait six more months. He was going to be one of the oldest boys going on rumspringa for the first time, and he just couldn’t wait.
He peeked into the barn that was their destination. There were over sixty young folks, laughing, dancing and drinking mash. He grinned broadly. They were finally here.
As they walked into the party, many of their friends greeted them. The others knew that they weren’t supposed to be there, but they didn’t care. Why should they? Many of them had done the same.
David wondered if his family knew what he did at night. He always did his best to make sure that they were asleep and didn’t hear a peep when he left, but there was always the possibility he would be found out.
He had tried to change his parents' minds. He had tried to convince them of the fact he was more than old enough to go on rumspringa. They had insisted that he wasn’t mature enough for them to even consider it. They had said that if he waited until he was mature then he would make wiser decisions.
He had to disagree on their assessment of his maturity. If he was asked, he would say he was one of the most mature young people in the whole community. But his opinion didn’t count for much.
Despite what his parents said, he wasn’t going to let that dictate what kind of fun he had. He wasn’t about to miss out on everything his friends were doing. In his mind, he had waited long enough.
Glad you made it tonight, David. Still too young for rumspringa?
one of his friends chuckled.
David knew that it was mostly in good fun, but there was always that little bit of him that resented that his friends were right about his situation.
Look, there she is.
Charlie’s voice interrupted his thoughts and kept him from answering.
Who?
David tried to follow Charlie’s gaze. After a few moments, he spotted who Charlie must have been talking about.
A girl was dancing in the middle of the barn. David wasn’t sure if she was Amish or not. She was wearing Englisher clothing. She had on a tight red tank top and a pair of blue jean shorts.
Her clothes were tight and definitely what David’s parents would consider one of the more inappropriate clothing choices that Englishers made.
The girl turned gracefully as she danced. He thought the girl looked quite beautiful, and he recognized her. He had spoken to her a few times at different parties. She was from a nearby community
