Building self-confidence requires an understanding of self-values and beliefs. This book helps to banish self-defeating habits and build solid self-esteem. The reader learns to mindfully create a positive self-image and bring self-esteem in line with feelings and actions.

    PREFACE

Solid self-esteem is not tangible but is something that people need to smoothly move through life and do it with joy. Self-esteem is a core psychological asset allowing the utilization of skills and potential. It is a personal concept of values, feelings and actions. The good thing about self-esteem is that nobody is born with low or high esteem. Almost anyone can build a solid self-esteem.

Through life experience, people learn to think and feel someway about themselves. In self-reflection, they assess behaviour, feelings and compare them with their values. Self-esteem evolves from moment to moment by valuations and actions. The problems with self-esteem rise from what people validate and believe. Based on their beliefs, they compare themselves, and when they aren’t the person they wish to be, their self-esteem goes down. To have a solid self-esteem, people have to assess personal actions in harmony with their values.

Whether someone has solid self-esteem depends on whether they live their values, whatever these values might be. When a self-esteem concept is built upon good values, people are able to grow good feelings towards themselves. Along with good values, mindfully developed self-esteem aids to remove underlined fears and conflicts. Solid self-esteem works as psychological immunity. It protects an individual’s strengths and allows personal adequacy. Building self-esteem requires an understanding of values and effective actions.

The goal of this book is to help the reader build solid self-esteem based on good values and enforce positive feelings about the person they are. The following pages provide a useful and comprehensive strategy to do it. The reader will learn:

    - to understand the values incorporated in self-esteem,

    - to modify values of self-concept to stop self-depreciation,

    - how to bring personal values in line with actions to raise self-esteem,

    - to sensibly see oneself in a larger perspective,

    - to understand a positive self-image,

    - to change self-defeating habits eroding self-esteem,

    - to stop focusing on groundless problems decreasing self-esteem,

    - to control negative thinking wearing down self-esteem,

    - to develop confidence growing self-esteem,

    - to develop a caring attitude towards oneself,

    - mindfulness to stop being caught up in reactions,

    - to remove the irrational sense of isolation and inadequacy,

    - finding comfort in personal imperfection and flaws.

    INTRODUCTION

What is the purpose of this book?

To help the reader understand why they should work on their self-esteem, I have to take them back to my work. When working with clients, based on studies and observations, I found that inaccurate thinking about oneself is the centre of most problems. I could produce almost an immediate effect when pointing out the client’s thinking errors and their wrong focus. The concentration on the present and offered alternatives nearly instantaneously brings progress. When engaging this approach, people become aware and able to change. They can leave negativity and shift their feelings.

This book brings encouraging outcomes to a spectrum of problems as it builds self-esteem upon realistic and good values. It provides a foundation for the practice of positive mindset and behaviour to advance towards a confident experience. This book guides the reader to reset unconstructive thinking that triggers a domino effect distorting social life. They focus on positive change and behaviour to develop solid self-esteem.

    Why is self-esteem so important?

Building self-esteem is crucial. When people love themselves, they make a better life. They create happier relationships when feeling loved and supported, and being able to offer love and support in return. They easily adjust or find a fulfilling career. Someone with solid self-esteem experiences good feelings. They believe they are worthy of love, appreciation, happiness and success. They can recognize their good qualities and generally strive for a happy and successful life.

Low self-esteem makes many things difficult and it affects different people in different means. Someone has low self-esteem in specific situations, others largely feel and think low about themselves. Low self-esteem is potentially dangerous and it links to mental health issues and poor relationships. Individuals with low self-esteem blame themselves for things that aren’t their fault. They underestimate their abilities and lack confidence. They are unfair on themselves and they expect things to go wrong regardless of the circumstances and actions. They might be too critical and harsh as they don’t believe in themselves.

    What is a self-concept?

A self-concept is a spectrum of thoughts, beliefs, values and self-assessments. It is the backbone of self-esteem. People have to know that their self-concept as personal worthiness is based on the evaluation of its standards. If there is a conflict between their values and actions, they experience self-rejection. A self-concept consisting of realistic and good values allows acceptance and building solid self-esteem.

How should the reader work with this book?

Working through this book as a whole will provide the fullest knowledge and opportunities to practise all the reader can learn. Some readers might
