Before we proceed to my story, let’s take a look at the potential within every human to discover or to recognize truth.

In his book The Seven Habits of Highly Effective People, Stephen Covey explains empathy listening. He states that empathetic listening requires deep focus on what is being spoken. He further states that the listener is alert and sensitive to the speaker. The listener is to do their best to feel what the speaker is saying. In modern vernacular, the listener really gets into it. Across from his wife or other speakers in a restaurant, a good empathetic listener focuses on the speaker, and his eyes do not glance at who is walking by or at anything else. A good empathetic listener transfers focus from self to the speaker. Immediately, as we raise the bar and begin to practice this level of listening, we will be utterly amazed at the excitement, life and vitality that will come from our interpersonal relationships. And this includes the whole gamut from casual acquaintances to intimate friends.

We can shift gears a bit here and apply the Stephen Covey insights to reading as well as to listening.

Their ears are hard of hearing, And their eyes they have closed, Lest they should see with their eyes and hear with their ears, Lest they should understand with their hearts and turn, So that I should heal them.’ (Matthew 13:13-15)

Trust in the LORD with all your heart, And lean not on your own understanding; In all your ways acknowledge Him, And He shall direct your paths. (Proverbs 3:5-6)
