    Book Overview

The Fault in Our Stars is a novel by award winning author John Green. The novel is about Hazel Grace Lancaster. Hazel has thyroid cancer that has metastasized to her lungs. Although her cancer is fatal, Hazel is using an experimental drug that has slowed the growth of her tumors.

Hazel’s mother worries that Hazel spends too much time isolated from the world. Her mother makes her go to a cancer support group for children like her. Hazel dislikes the support group because she finds the whole thing pointless. She has a friend in the group, Isaac, who finds it as tedious as she does.

At one of the support group meetings, Isaac brings a friend, Augustus Waters. Augustus had osteosarcoma several years ago and lost his leg. He and Isaac met while they were both in the hospital. When Augustus sees Hazel, he cannot stop looking at her. Augustus asks Hazel to watch a movie with him. Hazel goes to his house. They talk for a while in his room. Augustus wants to know what Hazel’s favorite book is. She tells him about a book called An Imperial Affliction. The book is about a young girl with cancer. The book ends mid-sentence because the girl died. After Augustus reads the book, they discuss the ending and try to figure out how it ended for the other characters.

Augustus writes to the author of the book, Peter Van Houten, via Van Houten’s assistant, Lidewij Vliegenthart. Even though Van Houten never answered any of Hazel’s many fan letters, he immediately answers Augustus’ email. The letter is very thoughtful and full of insight about everything but the answers Augustus and Hazel want about the book. Hazel also sends a letter to Van Houten, but his response to her is less enthusiastic.

Augustus arranges a trip to Amsterdam so that he and Hazel can meet Van Houten and hopefully learn what happened to the characters in his book. Hazel is excited, but then it appears Augustus wants to kiss her. Hazel reacts oddly and decides that it is because she knows she is going to die and she does not want him to be hurt by her death. Hazel tells Augustus that they can be friends, but she cannot allow him to
