Workplace Bullying
It’s Just Bad for Business
Prevention, Management, & Elimination Strategies for Organizations & Everyone Else
Paul Pelletier, LL.B. PMP
Incivility is a pandemic in our workplaces, ranging from inconsiderate behaviors to bullying. Its impact is enormous: disengagement; loss of creativity and productivity; and sick leave, benefit, and turnover costs. Pelletier’s book accurately describes this pervasive issue in workplaces, outlines the underlying causes, and provides solutions for all involved. At the end of the day, none of us can and should ignore behaviors that prevent others from feeling included and able to contribute. This book is both a call to action, and a prescription for what needs to happen. It will appeal to all with its accessible language and clarity of articulation.
— Lisa Castle | Vice-President of Human Resources
The University of British Columbia Faculty of Education
A clear voice from someone who clearly knows, first-hand, the costs of bullying in today’s workplace. This easy-to-read and practical handbook should be essential reading for every human resources practitioner and organizational leader. Readers will learn what bullying is and isn’t, and gain insights into the first critical steps to preventing and addressing workplace harassment effectively.
— Roy Johnson | The Bully Whisperer
The Neutral Zone Coaching & consulting Services, Inc.
Paul Pelletier has struck a nerve that resonates with those of us who understand that workplace success is critically dependent on the workplace environment. During decades of project management at the CIA and elsewhere, I learned that high performance teams cannot exist where counterproductive behavior, such as bullying, spread like a poison. This noteworthy book is loaded with imperative information needed to recognize, understand, counteract, and even avoid poisonous bullying.
— Michael O’Brochta PMI-ACP, PMP | former Director of CIA’s Professional Project Management Certification, and President of Zozer inc.
Any of us who work in organizations are well aware of the issue of harassment and bullying in the workplace. Paul Pelletier offers us a rich insight into both the individual and institutional practices that contribute and maintain such behavior. Most importantly, Pelletier offers strategic approaches for dealing with these issues, as well as the toxicity they create. The book makes an important contribution to organizational practice and theory.

I want to thank all the courageous people who have shared their stories about workplace bullying. As a frequent presenter at conferences and workshops throughout the world, I’m constantly reminded that the bullying experience I thought I was enduring in silence is actually one that thousands of others relate to. You are the inspiration for this book. It is my sincere hope that, together, we will become better informed and empowered to take action to raise awareness and create a zero tolerance for bullying in our workplaces.
To those who supported me in this unexpected personal and professional journey, I owe much gratitude. From a traditional career in the legal and business world to an advocate against workplace bullying – thank you for encouraging me to remain focused in the pursuit of a higher purpose.
To my friends and family who suffered while I was in the midst of the bullying hurricane and supported me through the fallout and re-building process – thank you for your patience, compassion, and guidance.
To the medical professionals who cared for me and helped me heal both physically and mentally – you gave me back my health and passion to take the bully and organization supporting him to task. Despite the odds and result, I firmly believe that we have a choice to be powerless or face our fears head-on. With that higher purpose, I find inspiration from others much wiser than I.

Introduction
Everyone … likely has a bullying story, whether as the victim, bully, or as a witness.
— Michael M. Honda¹
Fifteen years ago, the word bullying
was a word used almost exclusively in the context of our schools and the suffering of children at the hands of cruel classmates. The world has woken up to the reality of this behavior in broader contexts. We now hear about bullying almost every day, still in our schools and on the Internet, but with rapidly growing regularity in our workplaces.
Bullying in the workplace is a significant global problem that, just like cancer or economics, ignores the borders of culture, nationality, gender, class, age, or other traditional distinction. It not only causes harm to those in the target zone of the bullies but also has enormous negative impacts to the workplace culture, projects, programs, profits, and success of our organizations.
I challenge you to Google workplace bullying
as a starting point. There are many useful articles, research papers, stories, and websites dedicated to the topic and even a Workplace Bullying Institute. The United Kingdom has a National Workplace Bullying Advice Line. As one U.S. TV newscast described it, the dirty little workplace secret
of workplace bullying is being fully exposed.
It may also come as a surprise to know that there are many YouTube videos about workplace bullying – everything from TED Talks² to TV news and journalistic essays on the topic. In short, there is an abundance of useful and readily available information, research, and tools for preventing, identifying, and addressing workplace bullying.
Yet, despite a wealth of
