    Hidden Desires - Scarlett Press

    1. Waiting on Him

MIA FLIPPED THROUGH the magazine as if she was on automatic pilot, turning pages every few moments, barely registering the vivid images and punchy headlines of the articles. Her mind was elsewhere.

She looked at her watch and sighed. It’d be another thirty minutes before her husband Dylan appeared around the corner and met her in the lobby.

Her indiscretion with Jamal was weighing heavily on her mind. Despite feeling anxious and guilty, she couldn’t stop thinking of his touch and how expertly he’d brought her to orgasm.

She tossed the magazine down and began pacing the spacious lobby of the upscale resort she and Dylan were staying at. The beauty of the decor was lost to Mia as she continued to flip-flop from one emotion to the next, a mess of clashing feelings spinning through her like a confusing, jittery cloud.

Time seemed to be inching along, and Mia felt every frustratingly slow moment of it crawling by.

A staff member at the front desk watched her walk in aimless circles. When she passed by for the third time, the lady asked if she’d like some coffee, giving her an inviting smile.

Mia declined politely and returned to the seating area, away from the curious stares of the resort staff. She flopped down in an overstuffed chair covered in bright patterns of luxurious fabric.

She wondered if Dylan would want to stay the rest of the weekend when he learned what she’d done, or if he’d want to pack up and go home as soon as possible.

Only a few hours earlier, she’d felt empowered by her anger and need for revenge, to spend the afternoon doing naughty things with the handsome black photographer she’d met during a walk on the beach.

But discovering the true nature of the explicit pictures on Dylan’s phone had changed everything. Now, she was restless with the need to find out what it meant for the future of their relationship.

    2. Rough Start in Paradise

WHEN DYLAN ANNOUNCED they were going on a four-day getaway, Mia was delighted. They needed time away from his busy work schedule to reconnect and rediscover one another. Her head filled with images of fun activities during the day, followed by romantic evenings over candlelight dinners and sexy frolicking between the sheets.

So far, the reality had been anything but.

Here they were, at a beautiful resort nestled against the ocean, and Dylan had been buried in work since the first evening they’d arrived.

On the drive to the coast, he’d dropped a bit of a bombshell, telling her that there was a group of executives in the area that his company was courting. He said the firm was paying for their trip, and he was expected to have dinner with the executives on the first night, and also that he would probably need to take a meeting or two before they left.

When he’d noticed Mia’s wary expression, he’d quickly assured her that he’d be free the rest of the time, and they’d have fun together.

She smiled and tried to relax, but a nagging doubt began to cloud her excitement. Dylan was a good man, a wonderful lover — when he had the energy to make love, which lately was rarely — and really fun to be around, when he wasn’t busy working himself to into exhaustion.

Mia knew his work ethic was admirable, as was the driving passion behind it — to provide for her and create a nice stash of savings for their future — but sometimes she felt lonely, especially the last couple months.

Dylan had been working longer hours than usual, and she had found herself longing for his company. He’d encouraged her to go out on the nights he worked late, even sending his best friend, Blake, by their house to try to persuade her to go out for drinks or dinner, but Mia had declined.

She had plenty of time with her friends. What she wanted was time with her husband.

When Dylan had described the trip — an extended weekend at a luxury ocean resort — it sounded like exactly what they needed. She’d been looking forward to soaking up a few days of uninterrupted time with her husband, so she couldn’t help but feel crestfallen to learn he was planning to mix business with pleasure.

They’d barely been checked into their suite when Dylan began rushing her to get dressed for the dinner.

But... we just got here! Mia exclaimed.

She’d just kicked her shoes off and had her hand on the sliding glass door to the balcony, desperate to step out and feel the breeze of salty air against her face.

Sorry, sweetie, he said, looking apologetic to be the bearer of bad news. I know there are a lot of other things we’d rather be doing, but this dinner is important. These guys have been putting us off for months — if they’re finally ready to meet, then we have to jump on the chance.

Mia frowned and looked out the glass doors wistfully. The ocean was right there, but so far away. Reluctantly, she left the view and went to get ready for dinner.

She’d hoped the meal would be quick and painless, but instead she struggled to get through the evening.

For starters, she was surprised when several of Dylan’s colleagues joined them at the large table. She learned they were staying at the resort, too. That further crushed any delusions Mia had about having a romantic getaway alone with her husband.

The guys greeted Dylan enthusiastically, talking excitedly about the resort’s lounge and basketball court. She sighed inwardly and slumped against her chair, knowing that his friends would likely insist on inviting him to join them at the bar every evening or to come play a game of hoops.

His co-workers were not Mia’s favorite people — they lacked Dylan’s calm maturity and good manners. They
