All patient scenarios have been modified to protect patient privacy.

Case numbers are from various reputable news sources as there was not a clear location to obtain all data. I wonder why that is.

This poetry book is dedicated to all the frontline workers, essential workers, and all of the people we’ve lost. It should have been different.

    January 2020

    U.S. Cases: 0

    U.S. Deaths: 0

    it was

    supposed to be

    the best year

    of my life

    everything

    was falling into place

    and i couldn’t

    have been happier

    ––––––––

    at the end

    of january

    i went to hollywood

    and participated

    in the

    homeless

    youth count

    and the numbers

    of youth

    on the streets

    was higher

    than before

    but hope

    was on

    the horizon

    ––––––––

    a breaking news report

    caught

    my eye

    there was

    a deadly virus

    overseas

    that can’t

    come here,

    can it?

    i asked

    ––––––––

    we

    had just marched

    in washington

    protesting

    inhumane conditions

    in the migrant

    detention centers

    and demanding access

    to flu vaccine

    to prevent

    a pandemic

    because as physicians

    we knew

    that a virus

    could take hold

    of people

    in closed quarters

    and run rampant

    February 2020

    U.S. Cases: 22

    U.S. Deaths: 1

    ––––––––

    it surrounded us

    like a net

    catching its prey

    before it

    ensnared us

    and suddenly

    everywhere i went

    all i heard

    were the muffled sounds

    of people

    coughing

    six days

    of fever

    cough

    trouble breathing

    and lying flat

    on my belly

    the humidifier piping

    steamed air

    beside me

    i immediately wondered
