    About the Author

Of the making of books there is no end. So what? These are my creative footsteps. Historical documentation for the world to come.

    ––––––––

    - the Author

    To The Reader

As an experiment I've decided to place beside many of the poems in this book my thoughts on its origin or maybe just a comment. Not all are commented and not all have origin narratives because I've forgotten or never knew where the poem came from.

    Basin Poems

    An inch of ground

    ––––––––

    If I give in

    they'll take

    every inch

    of ground

    in the basin

    ––––––––

    From the deep bog

    to the tall white pine

    ––––––––

    They'll take their time

    but they'll keep comin'

    ––––––––

    I've known they

    want to change

    everything

    everywhere

    ––––––––

    And I dare

    to stand my ground

    until they grind

    me down

    ––––––––

    And take my

    shavings

    to Atlanta

    for some prettified

    garden cover

    ––––––––

    But I'll hover

    over them

    and below

    for roots aren't as easy

    to burn out

    As are men.

    ––––––––

    Comment:

    ––––––––

I've seen the county I live in change pretty much beyond recognition in the past sixty years. I'm a conservative at heart (not the political kind) in that I think all change should be well thought out and not just for the whims of some developer.

    ––––––––

So I imagine all the trees that used to stand in this county but are now gone. But maybe there roots are still there, underground, unseen, and who knows what unforeseen consequence will come?

    ––––––––

    Armurchee

    ––––––––

    At Armurchee

    we fought the war

    from behind

    split-rail fence

    and barn door.
