Universal Citizen - Christopher Sims
Chapter 1: Universal Struggle
Universal Citizen
I am looking at this world we're in
through a worldwide lens, deciphering
the winds of hope, of bloodlines,
of national ties. I see red, white, and blue.
I see red, black, and green. I feel change
coming. I hear women humming in a new
world.
––––––––
This is not the planet it used to be. This
planet is no longer smiling at you and me.
Its lungs are the trees and she feels sorry
for the hummingbirds and the African bees.
––––––––
I am standing in the middle of this place.
A former oasis. Dying cities where urbanites
fuss, complain, and fight.
––––––––
Black, brown, red, white, and yellow faces
how can we embrace a new America? A
new Middle East? A new Africa? A new
pathway to peace?
––––––––
Let us all take deep breaths. Let us contemplate
on what's left. Can we take unified political steps
towards real policies and solutions? If not, then
hope is only an illusion and our children will
only live in confusion.
––––––––
I am distancing myself from harmful rhetoric,
slick campaign ads, foreign policy that
destroys families and turns children into orphans.
––––––––
I want to sit in the middle of the four directions
of the Indigenous people of the globe. I want to
hold blades of new grass in my hand and know
that I am connected to the All. Know that I am
a universal citizen realizing that the light
in all of us is where the real change begins.
The Democrat And The Republican
The Democrat told the Republican
" I am going to kick your butt, if you
don't go along with our budget cuts."
The Democrat was mean, the Democrat
was lean, but nothing the Republican was
saying helped things.
––––––––
You see, the Democrats ruled the Senate
and the Republicans ruled The House.
The Democrats were waiting until the
Republicans were voted out.
––––––––
But that was a long time coming, soon,
not hardly. 'Cause the Republicans were
winning with the Tea Party. And nobody
can tell them what to do. They love the
liberty that have representing the red,
white, and blue.
––––––––
The Democrats hated it, stuck in
