    America 2020 - Karen Garfield

    OSCAR PARTY

    Rumblings in China

    Of a virus called Corona

    Going on about our business

    Work, then yoga.

    ––––––––

    A young ophthalmologist

    Sounding the alarm

    This is serious,

    A viral storm.

    ––––––––

    Should we be worried?

    Could it happen here?

    We live in America.

    Will it disappear?

    ––––––––

    News from China.

    The doctor is dead,

    Temporary hospitals,

    Running out of beds.

    ––––––––

    Pictures from China

    Masks on faces,

    It’s only one person,

    No more cases.

    ––––––––

    Still working in our cubbies.

    Going out to dinner

    Oscar party this Sunday

    Dress, sparkly silver.

    ––––––––

    If only we knew

    Of future travails.

    Could we have prevented

    The deaths of the frail.

    mRNA

The urgency of life has stopped.

    The go, go, go,

    Has become

    Stay, stay, stay.

    ––––––––

    A single strand of

    Messenger RNA

    Had turned civilization

    Into disarray.

    POTD

    Humans are a doing race

Hard for us in a stagnant place.

We’re used to living at a frantic pace,

With constant postings of the selfie face.

    ––––––––

    Small pleasures I now enjoy,

Glass of wine, eggs, my two boys.

    ––––––––

    What else? Fresh air,

    Good books, a quiet stare.

    ––––––––

    We’ll return quickly

To the world of go, go, go.

    Be still. Just be.
