Dedication
I have never done a book dedication before, and probably will never do one again. But considering the driving theme of this book (which I'll reveal later) and after the recent passing of Neil Peart, the lyricist and drummer of my favorite band Rush, I felt this was something I had to do. Even if you are not a Rush fan, you would be surprised by how many musicians, actors, politicians, writers/creators, bastions of freedom, and just the average every day person, have been influenced by their music and lyrics. I happen to fit several of those above categories, including being a die-hard Rush fan for over forty years. I will take it a step further… Rush has been my number-one favorite band for nearly my entire life. There isn’t really a close second! That is the thing about Rush fans—we consider ourselves part of a family, because being a Rush fan is much more than just liking their music. I believe this is because Rush lived and worked by the simple idea you'll be learning about in this book.
I consider myself incredibly lucky to have been alive during Rush’s career. There are many reasons for this, but here are a few that stick out. First, the members of Rush are best friends, and have been during most of their lives. Geddy Lee, the singer and bassist, and Alex Lifeson, the guitarist, met in junior high. How many bands can say that? Second, Rush is the hardest working band that has ever existed, and they have never conformed to what record companies thought they should be. Third, they take their craft incredibly serious and are the utmost professionals, not only in their craft, but also as people.
This will sound crazy to most, but I don’t think I would be the person I am today without Rush’s influence. Matter of fact, just an hour before they announced Neil’s passing, I had included a lyric from one of their songs to prove one of my points in this book. Again, something I had never done before. I definitely feel that not only this book, but many of my other books, are directly influenced by Rush. And I’m not the only one who will say this. They have touched so many people during their career. They have motivated many of us to live the life we want, but also, to be the best people we can be and to be thankful for everything we have.
A couple of Rush’s songs resonated with me greatly growing up. But it would be difficult for me to say I have a couple definitive favorite songs. For example, the lyrics in Subdivisions
(from the album Signals - 1982), and Emotion Detector
(from the album Power Windows - 1985), which are very different albums from each other. Considering these albums were released during my teenage years, while I was shaping my beliefs and figuring out who I was, it is no surprise that Rush’s most influential songs for me came from this period.
Subdivisions
is about the urban sprawl and teen angst of the 70s and 80s in North America. The lyrics of this song echo what a lot of young people were thinking at the time—not fitting into what society told us we should be…
Growing up it all seems so one-sided
Opinions all provided
The future pre-decided
Detached and subdivided
In the mass production zone
Nowhere is the dreamer
Or the misfit so alone
I think many of us growing up during this time felt that our identity and Free Will were being eroded away. We were expected to conform, and we were struggling with this. Matter of fact, I still struggle with this today. But I've also learned that fitting in isn't nearly as important as living a life true to yourself. The fact that you're reading this tells me you're starting to realize this too. That's why this book is based on the simple idea of living with personal integrity. And I'm not just talking about integrity as in doing the right thing.
Heck, even terrorists believe they're doing the right thing. I'm talking about living a life true to your principles instead of living by someone else's rules. Rush's music introduced me to this idea, and today I see it as the ONLY path to inner peace and happiness. That's why I've based this book on that simple idea.
Another Rush song, Emotion Detector
came out at the most pivotal time in my young life. Because of a tragic, life altering event, 1985 would be the last time I spoke with my father. I’m not comfortable sharing all the details of this event just yet. But I remember sitting on my bed with tears in my eyes listening to the words of Emotion Detector
…
When we lift the covers from our feelings
We expose our insecure spots
Trust is just as rare as devotion —
Forgive us our cynical thoughts
If we need too much attention —
Not content with being cool
We must throw ourselves wide open
And start acting like a fool
If we need too much approval
Then the cuts can seem too cruel
This is probably the most sensitive information I have ever shared about my personal life. It relates to the trials and tribulations of what shaped me into the person I am today. Rush has always been a very private band, so I guess that rubbed off on me a bit as well. I have never looked for sympathy or for the spotlight to shine on me in anything I’ve done. It’s always been about the message.
It is amazing to me that songs written in 1982 and 1985 are still just as powerful and relevant today. That is the genius of Rush. They didn’t write about getting laid, partying like… well, like rock stars. Their songs were very deep, not only musically, but lyrically unique. Neil tackled the deep psychological aspects of life and being human in this crazy world. No other band has played the type of music (cerebral yet melodic) with accompanying lyrics that made you think.
When you had those lyrics in front of you, you felt they were speaking directly to you. It was as if they understood what you were thinking and going through. As a want to be guitar player
since the age of fifteen, their music was just mind blowing to me. No band has ever come close to their level of musicianship, and they did it with only three members.
Since their retirement in 2015, which I was lucky enough to see two shows on that tour, I had hoped that just maybe they would get together one more time. Now I know that is not going to happen. But I have over four decades of the best music and memories a fan could ever ask for.
All that said, I want to thank Rush for being Rush. I especially want to thank Neil for being a champion of hope and integrity and of overcoming incredible hardships in life. I highly recommend you read his book Ghost Rider, which is one of the best books I have ever read about dealing with tragedy and finding redemption. For those of you who do not know, in the late 1990s, Neil’s nineteen-year-old daughter was killed in a car accident. Ten months later his wife succumbed to cancer. Again, Rush is much more than just a band. They teach us about perseverance, and about doing the right thing, even when it is not popular and even if it’s not in our best interest. This is what it means to live your life by principles instead of being ramrodded by someone else's agenda. This is personal integrity, and it's the only path to true inner peace and happiness. We'll talk about these principles and their accompanying Habits in this book.
Rest in peace Neil, even though you are gone I will continue to follow your Vapor Trails.
Guess What? I’m Not Supposed to be Here!
If I had followed the road, I was destined to be on; I would not be where I am today. A pretty bold statement, right? As some may know, my childhood was not one of the best, but you know what? That is the case for a great many people. You can cry and whine about it, or you can dust yourself off and move on. Playing
