Chapter 1

Lion’s Gate

I received it with quiet alarm in the Dover Pub the night the rains came. It was thrust into my hand by a stranger I did not know exiting quickly as he entered with a turn-up of his coat collar and a side glance back before he disappeared. It was true, I had been coming more frequent here. More frequent than maybe I realised or even cared to admit. A regular as they might say. Regular was a kind euphemism.
