Chapter 1
Lion’s Gate
I received it with quiet alarm in the Dover Pub the night the rains came. It was thrust into my hand by a stranger I did not know exiting quickly as he entered with a turn-up of his coat collar and a side glance back before he disappeared. It was true, I had been coming more frequent here. More frequent than maybe I realised or even cared to admit. A regular as they might say. Regular was a kind euphemism. More like one among the drawn drunk sad faces. But who was to blame? It became my only solace from a loveless marriage that now was to bear fruit. A family I thought would make her more endearing? Nurturing even? Ever I hoped. But she seemed worse, ill-fitted for pregnancy and she was still the same blunted bore of a woman I was forced into. More like a pigeon than a lark. To sleep with regrettably until I was done with her or her with me. Whoever couldn't hold out the longest? I'm sorry, I digress with my own petty problems.
