HEELS HIGH & HIGH STANDARDS - KATRINA GILDER
Chapter 1
Tired of trying
Tired of trying
Mark heard crying coming from the bathroom after getting home from work. Vanessa baby are you okay?
asked Mark as he tried to turn the knob but the door was locked. I'm fine,
replied Vanessa as she wiped the tears from her eyes. Unlock the door. After Vanessa opened the door the only thing Mark could see was the mascara running down her cheeks. What's wrong?
asked Mark as he pulled his wife closer to him to comfort her. We're never going to be able to have kids and it hurts so bad. Don't say that, are you giving up on us? I'm not giving up I'm just tired of trying, it's been three years and we have almost cleaned out our savings. You tired of trying is just like saying you're giving up. I'm not Mark but I know you want kids and that's stressing me out that I can't give them to you. There's no pressure coming from my end. I'm happy with just seeing you when I come home, you're all I need. It sounds good babe but I know your heart,
said Vanessa as she put her arms around Mark and kept them there until she pulled herself together. Vanessa was becoming more and more concerned about not being able to conceive for her husband. Negative thoughts began to flow through her head causing her to drain energy from the marriage that she had put so many years into. Vanessa and Mark had already blown through their entire saving on In Vitro Fertilization and so far they wasn't successful at conceiving. With Vanessa coming from a huge family of four sisters and two boys and everyone having kids but her could sometimes be a little depressing. But Mark never knew what it was like to have a big family, being that he was his mother's only son who never knew his father. It was always just Mark and his mother with no help from anyone else. Mark was raised by a strong woman who was too proud to take assistance from the government. She worked two jobs to take care of her son and raised him to be the best man she knew he could be. Maybe that's why Vanessa felt the pressure to give Mark the family he never had. His first born, his mother's first grandchild and someone he can raise to be the man he is today. Vanessa thought about conceiving everyday but touching on the subject was just too much for her to dwell on with others. Around family and friends Vanessa put on as if her career took up so much of her time. She played this role so long until people believed her not knowing that discussing how wonderful their kids were, was tearing Vanessa up inside, wanting that same dream they was living. Work was all Vanessa knew to keep from going into depression or draining energy from her husband. As one of Houston, Texas top lawyers Vanessa only had two losses out of thirty wins which was a record that most lawyers would dream of.
After hearing the sound of the alarm clock going off at six in the morning Vanessa woke up and began to rub her eyes. Sitting on the nightstand beside her was a gift bag as she smiled knowing who left it there.
"I woke up like this! Hey beautiful if my lady is reading this, then you're up by now looking as beautiful as you did when you fell asleep. Here are the Red Bottom heels that we seen in the mall last weekend ahh yeah you thought I forgot. Wear them today when you take on that new case"
Vanessa gushes after reading the note then she looked at her new red bottom heels and shook her head, that's my baby said Vanessa as she began to get dressed for work.
Leaving the house an hour early was mandatory for Vanessa due to dealing with that Houston downtown traffic. Before going to her office Vanessa would sometimes stop at Harris County Jail, to check up on some of her clients keeping them updated on their cases.
How's it going Eric?
I thought you would have made bond by now. Are you trying to be funny? And my people working on that. Man I'm in here with these crackheads, killers & homo's this shit is not for me. Eric calm down I know you not in here tripping over no county time, county time is much easier than prison time. Well I ain't trying to do no time Mrs. Vanessa, that's why I hired you right? You're the best in H-Town is the word, but I don't know these mutherfuckers already found me guilty in their heads. It's up to me to prove them wrong so let me do my job. Do you think I'm innocent? Do you really think I meant for that shit to go down the way it went down? I hope that what my clients tell me is the truth so I take the case to win it not dwell on if their guilty or not. You just danced all around that question. Eric I take cases to win them, now can we get down to business all the rest of this is irrelevant right? You just trying to be free. I'm definitely trying to be free but when I'm paying someone ten grand I want them to believe in me. I took the case didn't I?
said Vanessa while making eye contact with Eric until her phone began to vibrate. Give me a second,
said Vanessa. Hello. I been calling you since last night are you not getting my phone calls? I was sleep when you called me, but I had plans to return your call once I made it to the office, what's wrong? Lance went to jail last night. What! For what now?
asked Vanessa. Meet me at the Pie factory in an hour. The pie factory I thought you were on a diet! Paige, Paige hello. Not to day,
said Vanessa as she stuck the phone back in her purse. Women problems,
said Eric. Something like that now back to business, look don't worry about what I'm feeling about you because if for one second I thought you was one of them low life street thugs I wouldn't let you continue to waste my time to go back forth. Just know that I'm one of the best lawyers Houston has seen and you have my attention, so what is it going to be? Boo you already got my money so you know what it is. Boo? Don't ever call me that again and I'm sorry I have to end this visitation, an emergency just came up. Where at the pie factory? Yes.
replied Vanessa. I got you the bond reduction now it's up to you to front the eight thousand. See you later this week.
said Vanessa as she gabbed her things and left. Eric wasn't too pleased as he slammed the phone and got up to return to his cell.

asked Vanessa. Lance went to jail
