Introduction
People are history. We’re the sum of what we have learned and experienced, moving ever forward. We’re also the sum of everything we’ve been taught and picked up from others. No one escapes history, because that’s our nature.
When one steps back and sees how we depend on history, it’s a dizzying realization. We need clear knowledge, useful information, and accurate facts. We rely on people who maintain records, store data, and interpret findings.
Yet, we also face gaps in history, bigotry shaping knowledge, and those that would manipulate the past to rule the future.
For those of us that create fictional settings, history matters as well. We wish to understand our worlds and understand the characters within it. We need to know who holds truth and creates lies.
To make fictional history is to face many challenges, and so I wrote this book.
How did this series come about? Many years ago, I published a column series on worldbuilding called Way With Worlds,
taking what I'd learned from writing, gaming, and coaching people. Years later, I revived and rewrote it, including knowledge I'd gained from various projects and experiences. It became a book series after that rewrite because I wanted to preserve it in a more accessible form.
