    Introduction

    Conspiracies are a classic element in fiction. A murder mystery has a Conspiracy of a few driven individuals. A galactic saga weaves plots and plans among shadowy worlds and forgotten alien races. Where would we be without the thrill of unriddling the mystery of a book and the plots of a villain?

    But Conspiracies are a difficult thing to write because there’s a difference between Conspiracy Theories (beliefs where the belief is the point) and Conspiracies (actual nefarious collaborations). The two often intersect, because any good Conspiracy is happy to have people running after something else. They also prove difficult to write because Conspiracies need organization and motivation to be believable – you can’t just be evil as a hobby.

    How did this come about? Many years ago, I published a column series on worldbuilding called Way With Worlds, taking what I'd learned from writing, gaming, and coaching people. Years later, I revived and rewrote it, including knowledge I'd gained from various projects and experiences. It became a book series after that rewrite because I wanted to preserve it in a more accessible
