    Introduction

    Disasters are part of our life – and part of our fiction. We write about them both because they exist, and because those times of chaos provide us tales of adventure, of caution, and human interest. Some of the fictions we write have to deal with the response to these disasters.

    This book is about handling fictional disasters in fiction.

    This book is the sequel to three previous books – on created disasters, natural disasters, and information disasters like propaganda. It explores how disaster response is part of your fictional setting, and asks questions to make sure it’s believable. Whether you read any of the first books or just wanted to focus on this, this is a friendly bit of coaching when disaster response is your focus.

    How did this come about? Many years ago, I published a column series on worldbuilding called Way With Worlds, taking what I'd learned from writing, gaming, and coaching people. Years later, I revived and re-wrote it, including knowledge I'd gained from various projects and experiences. After that re-write, it became a book series because I wanted to preserve it in a more accessible form.
