    Introduction

Clothes and jewelry, uniforms and badges, styles and fashion make up a lot of our lives. We are expected to dress a certain way, or we want to signal what we enjoy with a t-shirt, or a job requires a given outfit. It’s going to be the same for our fictional worlds – at least in most cases.

How people dress – and what they look like – should be part of any world we create. Outfits tell us about characters and their setting, from trends to enforced clothing codes. It’s another thing so commonplace we may forget to explore it at length.

This book is about exploring fashion in fictional settings in depth.

How did this come about? Many years ago, I published a column series on worldbuilding called Way With Worlds, taking what I'd learned from writing, gaming, and coaching people. Years later, I revived and rewrote it, including knowledge I'd gained from various projects and experiences. It became a book series after that rewrite because I wanted to preserve it in a more accessible form.

As I worked on those books, I realized that people may need very specific coaching on various subjects.
