    Chapter 1

    Lady Amara

This is the worst possible news ever. Lady Amara stormed around her room from one end to the other. How could they do this to me? I am in love with someone else, I cannot marry the prince. Not to mention the other problem.

Amara! hollered her father. Get down here now.

Lady Amara paused in her pacing as her name floated in the air. She sighed, Now what do they want? She said as her hand reached for the doorknob. At the top of the stairs, Amara paused to listen. No unfamiliar voices reached her ears as she placed her foot on the top riser. She stepped on the landing and paused once again to ensure there were no strangers about. Her shoulders pulled back, her chin raised, and her jaw firmed as she marched to the morning room. The butler pulled the door open in time for Amara to step into the room. You yelled?

Amara’s mother rolled her eyes and stated, Daughter, the royals are hosting a ball in seven days. We will attend and you will pay notice to the prince.

Amara hissed, "I do not wish to attend nor do I wish to ‘pay notice’ to the prince." Her fingers formed quotes around her mother’s favorite phrase.

You will do as you are told or find yourself disowned. Roared her father.

Amara jolted at the harsh statement. Her chin wobbled and water formed in her eyes. Hands clenched as she said, As you wish, FATHER. Her head swung around at the sound of clapping. Amara’s eyes narrowed at her mother as she asked, Why are you clapping and giggling?

A ball means new gowns! she cackled.

Lady Amara’s eyes widened, her head shook violently, as she stammered, No, no, no. I am not getting a new gown for THIS. No, I will not take part in this farce. She exploded.

Oh yes you will. You will not embarrass this family. Her father growled just before the door slammed behind him.

Amara collapsed and whined, Mother. Please don’t make me marry the prince. I love someone else.

You did this to yourself with your willful attitude and dependence. Her mother harrumphed as she followed her husband out of the room.

The door slamming into the wall caused Amara to jolt up in bed the following morning. Her maid’s chatter blasted through her pounding head. Why are you here so early? Better yet, why are you so chipper? Amara croaked while pushing her hair out of her face.

My Lady, the seamstress is here for your measurements. Isn’t it grand? A ball after all these months of boredom.

No, it is not grand! Amara snarled. I don’t need a new dress. She challenged.

The maid’s mouth dropped open. Why would you not want a new dress? I have never heard those words from your mouth before. She shuffled to the bedside and ordered, Up with yourself. Your mama has ordered you to the parlor in the next fifteen minutes or she will send your father up. Lord knows I don’t need to be on his unpleasant side. She finished as she grabbed the top covers and yanked.

Amara reached for the disappearing covers and yanked them back up before she chastised her maid. I am not ready to rise yet.

Tsk. Tsk. Tsk. The maid clicked. Your parents are in a state this morning. This is NOT the morning to push your luck. She finished as her hands fisted in the cover and removed it from Amara’s grasp.

The maid’s hands shoving at Amara forced her to the edge of the mattress. No sooner had Lady Amara stood then her maid’s hands grasped Amara’s nightgown and raised it over her head.

I can remove my own nightgown! Amara sputtered and swatted at the mounds of cotton around her head. Did you need to drown me in material?

Now, Milady, I only have ten more minutes for me to get you in a gown and to fix that rat’s nest of hair you have this morning.

For the next ten minutes, Amara allowed her maid to poke and prod her into
