We leave the backpacks against the motorhome’s wheels and we open the folding chairs, arranging them in a circle on the dead fallen leaves.

Max, Dan and Victor lean on the backrests, their faces towards the sun, while my boyfriend Matthew opens the motorhome’s door.

Beer? Coke?

Max puts his arm up, keeping his eyes closed facing the sun Everything!

Dan gets back on his feet. I’ll help you.

Victor moves his legs out of the way and lets Dan pass by, giving him a look and the slightest nod. Dan winks back. Who knows what they are plotting this time around.

Don’t forget the Doritos and the peanut butter! I yell.

Ok… Matthew responds from inside.

Max lights a cigarette and moves downwind so the smoke doesn’t bother us. In b1etween the almost leafless branches you can see the tip of the hill where we were. It was a good end of season trekking.

Dan gets out of the motorhome with his hands full of cans.

Here. He offers me two cans, one of Budweiser and on of Diet Coke.

I pick the Coke. Thanks.

Dan distributes the drinks and goes back in the motorhome. I slip off my boots and lay my feet in the sun. There is no other noise than the chirp of little birds, the wind passing through the branches and the creek’s far rustle.
