Undaunted: My Fight Against America's Enemies, At Home and Abroad by John O. Brennan: Conversation Starters

In the reminiscence of his decades in the Central Intelligence Agency (CIA), John O. Brennan shares his honest and direct memoir, Undaunted: My Fight Against America’s Enemies, At Home and Abroad. He recalls his experiences that influenced his beliefs and paved his way to an uncontested career in the intelligence community. Undaunted is Brennan’s account of the events that transpired while he is with the CIA involving his service under three presidents, the rise of al-Qaeda, Bin Laden’s assassination, the agency’s controversies in using enhanced interrogation procedures, and the role of the Kremlin in the 2016 presidential polls. This autobiography is the portrayal of a man’s unparalleled loyalty to America’s security and exceptional patriotism for his beloved country.

    Introducing Undaunted

It was in 1948 when John Brennan’s 28-year-old Irish father made his way and sailed across the Atlantic Ocean to get to America. When he got the chance to travel at an early age overseas, particularly in Indonesia and Cairo, being American helped him in the global context. His parents were instrumental in making sure that the young Brennan upholds honesty, decency, dignity, and an understanding of what is right or wrong. Throughout his life, he is living the teachings, and the models set by his parents. Being American shaped his beliefs and views and caused him to have a better sense of reality.

In Indonesia, Brennan saw the harsh reality of the tremendous difference between his way of life and other people’s. When he went to the villages, he saw destitution, poverty, and malnutrition. This established in him an appreciation for diversity and not just focus on counterterrorism. There is a bigger ecosystem that involves people of different ethnicities and classes.

As a young man, he had his ear pierced and surprised his former girlfriend with his diamond earring. Brennan was born into a Catholic household. His early ambitions include entering the priesthood and becoming the first-ever American Pope. However, he was at the University of Texas when he saw advertisements in newspapers that made him apply for the Central Intelligence
