A Man Named Boris

Terence J Goodchild
Once upon a very long time there lived a man named Boris. Now Boris was not a very clever man and had no qualifications as such, but he knew how to speak and communicate with animal’s not just birds and snakes but horse’s cow’s goats and any other animals living on the earth.
One day while walking in the forest he heard something crying and tried to find out where the crying was coming from and found a lizard with a rock sitting on its tail crying, the lizard saw Boris and tried to take off but could not because of the rock sitting on his tail, Boris walked towards the lizard and said, ‘please don’t be afraid I am here to help you.’ And with that lifted the rock off the lizard’s tail and it ran off, Boris just smiled he knew he would not get any thanks but it did not matter he had helped.
Boris walked on and did not see the lizard following him from a distance, he stopped to pick a flower and then saw the lizard looking at him, ‘hello lizard what is your name’ the lizard stared at Boris did this human just communicated with him or was he going mad but the human spoke and he understood.
‘My name is Eric.’ The lizard said ‘But how can I understand you, are you not human.’
‘I am indeed human but I can speak to animal’s that is why I told you not to be afraid, I would not harm you in anyway.’ Boris replied.
‘Wow that is the strangest thing I have ever heard.’ The lizard said.
‘Not really Eric you haven’t heard me sing yet.’ Boris replied with a smile.
‘You are joking are you not?’ Eric replied.
‘Believe me Eric you would not think my singing a joke if you heard me, I even whistle out of tune but tell me about yourself.’
‘I cannot believe I am speaking to a human we are all in fear of humans they hunt and eat us and if they don’t eat us they just kill us for fun, but here goes I was born in the mountains not far from here my mother was called Lizzy as in Lizzy the lizard my dad was called Bizzy so Bizzy got Bizzy with Lizzy and that is how they got little Eric, my parents were killed by hunters.
But before they died they hid me in a rock crevice and the hunters could not get me out so they gave up after an hour and went away with my parents hung over their shoulders it was a sad day for me so I started to walk the other way the hunters had gone to see if I can find any of my own species that is when the rock fell on me and here I am talking to you, what is your name.’
‘Boris is my name.’
‘Well Boris I have to get out of the sun and tomorrow I must carry on my journey so I will see you and thanks for your help.’ Eric turned to leave.
‘Why don’t we travel together I can carry you and then you won’t get tired and we can be company for each other and I will protect you from any hunters.’
Eric looked at Boris very strangely could he trust this human or was he saving him for dinner but would he not have killed him when he had the chance he could not escape and he did lift the rock off his tail maybe I can trust him.
‘Okay we will travel together because I have no idea where I am going and you being so tall you can see father than I can.’
‘First we will rest and then in the morning we will get a good start.’ Boris said.
Eric stayed close to Boris in the night it was very dark and Eric was scared then he heard voices and saw green sets of eyes looking out of the forest.
‘Come on.’ the voice said. ‘Let’s get the lizard the human won’t hear us he will make a fine meal for the family.’
Boris slept with one eye open and saw the lead rat coming towards the camp site.
‘What do you want rat.’ Boris asked.
‘Who, what you spoke to me.’ The rat said.
‘That is right Mr. Rat and I ask you once again what you want.’
At this the rat stopped and turned to his pack.’ Did you hear that you lot, he spoke to me.’
None of the other rats said a word they just nodded, the leader turned to Boris and said. ‘We have come for the lizard we need him to eat as we are very hungry.’
‘There is no way you are going to get the lizard as he is my friend and I am here to protect him.’ Boris replied.
‘Humans don’t protect animals humans kill animals so why are you protecting him.’ The rat said getting pretty annoyed at this human.
‘Because I am not your average human I can as you see communicate with animals so I am
