3592 West Ghost Squad Knowhere Men - Terence Goodchild

    Chapter 1

Mark and Lucy Walton own a farm in County Antrim a beautiful part of northern Ireland, he runs the dairy farm and Lucy a lawyer breeds horses, one day in winter a storm was about to hit the area and everyone was told to fasten down everything, so they went about it all day, making the place safe, Lucy had her horses well fenced in and all seemed okay, about six in the evening Mark went for a shower and the storm hit hard, Lucy panicked because she heard her horses neighing, and went outside to take a look, not informing Mark who could not hear the storm in the shower, the horses were terrified and she went over to unlock the gate when she was only half way opening it a lightning bolt hit the tree near the gate and snapped off a branch, the horses reared up and rushed the gate knocking Lucy into the mud, where each one trampled over her, she lay in the mud with massive injuries and died seconds later, Mark came out of the shower and shouted her, but no answer came back, he looked everywhere in the house but could not find his wife, the lightning struck again and the horses neighed very loudly and Mark knew where his wife had gone, he had told her many times not to go out at dusk, and an inner fear stuck him, he got his torch and went outside hoping he would find her okay, the rain beat down relentlessly and thunder crashed and lightning lit the sky, then he saw his worse fear his wife’s limp body lying in the mud, he screamed and ran over to her, and got down on his knees and held her in his arms, and lifted her dead body up and carried her into the house, he took her upstairs and lay her on the bed still covered in mud, he had no idea what to do, his madness and anger took over and he went downstairs and got his gun out of the gun safe loaded it and went outside, he approached the horses who by now were somewhat calm, as he knew horses fled and then stopped to eat, he approached the huge thoroughbred who he knew was the leader, stood at his head and lifted the gun, the horse looked at him with his big dark eyes, the rain poured down into their eyes, the gun wavered and Mark knew he could not shoot his wives horses, he lowered the gun and shot it into the ground, dropped it and sank to his knees and wept, the horse knew something was not right and came over to the man, put his big muzzle into Karl’s face and blew, this was a greeting only horses did to each other, then he nudged Mark as if to say, go and see to your wife, Mark grabbed the big horses mane and pulled himself up, then gave the big horse a huge hug, and went back inside, he went upstairs and lay next to his wife and fell asleep still in muddy clothes.

The next morning the farm hand Peter came in bright and early but nothing stirred, he thought it strange Mark and Lucy were not up, the front door was still open and he went inside, no one was about, then he saw the muddy footprints going upstairs and knew something was wrong, he bounded up the stairs and what he saw shocked him,

Lucy was lying on the bed on her back covered in blood and mud, Mark next to him asleep, peter thought they were both dead and ran downstairs and rang the police.

Mark was awoken by the police siren and got up, then saw his wife in the bed, the police came into the room and saw Mark standing over his dead wife, and arrested him, he had no idea what was happening, they took him outside and into a police car and drove away, the ambulance took the body of Lucy away.

Peter said he would stay and feed the animals until Mark returned, later that day a patrol car pulled up outside the farm and Mark got out, still covered in mud which by now had dried.

Are you okay Mark, what happened. Peter asked.

Mark just ignored him and walked passed into the house and slammed the door, Peter stood there wondering what he should do next, but the animals had been fed so he went home.

The next day, peter returned and nothing stirred, the cows were all making a noise and the horses ran around, Mark was nowhere to be seen, the front door was not locked so Peter entered, Mark’s coat was discarded on the floor, so Peter called out his name, nothing came back, so Peter entered the kitchen and there slumped on the kitchen table lay Mark and a near empty whisky bottle at his head.

Bloody hell, what has he done. Peter thought he had taken pills, but heard Mark mumble something, Peter thought he said Lucy.

The first thing to do was to feed the animals, Mark was going nowhere, it took about an hour for Peter to feed all the cows and horses, and then he came back into the house and heard Mark moving about in the kitchen, Peter entered and Mark turned around and saw him.

What are you looking at? Then he opened the cupboard door and took out another bottle of whisky.

Do you think that is wise? Peter asked.

What the fuck has it got to do with you, why don’t you piss off and leave me alone? Mark spat out, Peter had never seen Mark this way, and he was always kind and cheerful.

Then Mark fell over and the bottle smashed on the floor, he lent down to suck it up off the floor, Peter went over and stopped him.

Here let me help you up. Mark took a swipe at Peter, but missed and fell over onto the floor once more, the only thing Peter could do was drag him into the living room and put him on the couch, and cover him up, he thought he had better stay and keep an eye on him Peter went back into the kitchen and put the kettle on, maybe some strong coffee would help when he wakes up, Peter started to clean up the broken bottle and wipe up the whisky, then he made himself a cup of tea and waited, meanwhile he walked around the kitchen looking at all the pictures of Lucy and Mark and her horses, then saw a picture of Mark with another man, he looked like Mark so Peter assumed he was Mark’s brother, but he had never mentioned him, then a picture of the same man with a woman and a girl.

Must be his wife and daughter Peter said to himself, after about six hours, being at the farm, he had fed the animals again and checked the post, there was a letter from Manchester and a few bills, Peter placed them on the table, then he heard Mark moaning and went to see.

    Mark saw Peter and said.

What are you doing here Peter.

You past out drunk so I thought I would stay and look after the animals. Peter replied.

Oh yes thank you. Mark said.

Would you like some coffee? Peter asked.

    Yes please. Mark replied.

Peter came back with two mugs of coffee, and gave one to

    Mark thanked him.

What happened, here last night? Peter asked, Mark hesitated and then told Peter the story.

The police thought I had murdered Lucy, but they got a coroner’s report that she had been trampled to death, so they brought me home. Then he started to cry.

Is there anything I can do? Peter asked.

No Peter you have done enough, please go home. Mark replied.

I am sorry for your loss Mark, Lucy was a lovely lady, do you want me back tomorrow. Peter asked.

If you want to, either way I don’t care anymore. Mark said.

Okay I will see you in the morning. And he left.

Peter arrived the next day, and it all looked the same, the animals were all waiting again and Mark was nowhere to be found, then he heard an engine in the barn and went to look, Mark had got drunk again and tried to get into his car and fix an hose pipe through the window, to kill himself and being that drunk fell out onto the floor.

Bloody hell what has he done now. Peter switched off the engine and went around to Mark, he was dead drunk, Peter went into the house and rang an ambulance it arrived some time later, and took Mark to the hospital, Peter once again fed the animals, locked up the house and went to the hospital to see how Mark was, but they would not let him see Mark yet as he was having his stomach drained, so he waited, the doctor came and spoke to Peter.

Are you family. The doctor asked.

No I work for him. Peter replied.

Then young man, you had better find some family, as that man in their needs help.

    Chapter 2

Two days later the police arrived once more and said to Mark.

Hello Mr Walton my name is Detective Shaun Kelly and this is Detective Virginia Osullivan from Belfast police station could you please come down to the station we have something to ask you, also do you have a gun.

You have already interviewed me a few days ago, and what has having a gun got to do with anything. Mark Replied.

They were just the local boys from Carrickfergus now they have called us in we have some new evidence from the coroner he missed last time he examined your wife. Shaun replied.

Please come in. The police followed Mark inside he went to his gun cabinet and unlocked it and took out his rifle and handed it to Shaun.

    "Is this all? Shaun asked.

‘I have two M16 and a rocket launcher shall I bring that." Mark replied he looked at the two detectives and smiled.

Oh I see that was a joke. Virginia replied.

You know when we were growing up and watched the telly with my parents, the Irish we such great comedians but now how times have changed.

Yes well times have changed now shall we go.

The Journey took about half an hour to Belfast and they went into a new building that looked like it had just been finished, no one spoke as they went up in the lift, the door opened on the fourth floor and they went out into some office’s, "Would you like
