But the second we arrived back home, Mark’s behaviour changed completely.

Pulling up outside the house, it was like something had switched inside him.

With him not driving, I’d done all the running around, and after the long journey back to Cornwall from Bristol airport, I was knackered.

‘Right, let’s have a cuppa,’ I said, heading inside and dumping our cases in the hallway.

‘No,’ Mark said angrily. ‘I have to clean first.’

I knew he struggled with OCD tendencies, and liked the house to be immaculate.

But my son and his partner had been house-sitting for us, taking care of things and looking after the dog – and they’d left it truly spotless.

‘What are you on about?’ I laughed, wondering what mess he could possibly be seeing. ‘It is clean.’

I felt like I was walking on eggshells around him

And all of a sudden, Mark went nuts – screaming and shouting at me.
