    Despite my many athletic and academic successes in high school, I realized how nervous I was about starting college as soon as I stepped foot onto campus for the first time. I’d never had trouble fitting in; at a little over six feet tall with broad shoulders, an athletic build, piercing green eyes and a shock of thick, dirty blonde hair, my looks were usually enough to break the ice with strangers. Once the initial hurdle of awkward introductions was over, I typically let my intellect take over. I was confident, but at age eighteen still slightly unsure of my place in the world, especially the new and unfamiliar world of a prestigious university in the American South.

    Like most of the guys from my rural high school, I had taken part in almost every athletic activity that was offered, although that was mostly due to the fact that there wasn’t much else to do in my small hometown. I had been a wrestling star and played football on the varsity team, but it was my competitive nature more than any love for the actual sports that led me to success. That same attitude had been responsible for my academic accomplishments as well, and both athletic and academic skills had led me to the seemingly foreign college campus on which I now found myself standing. I was home sick, but what I missed most was not the small midwestern town I had called home for my entire life; I missed the sense of belonging more than anything else. As I surveyed the lush landscape of the campus and sweat from the oppressive heat ran down my brow, I decided I was going to join a fraternity.

    My competitive spirit being what it is, I naturally strove to be in the best fraternity on campus. From everything I had heard thus far, Alpha Kappa Omega was
