Could Russell Westbrook Lose His Starting Job?: Well, on the plus side, the Lakers' 132-111 loss to the Clippers (clean sweep by their crosstown rivals!) isn't the absolute worst of the season. For the time being, the recent debacle against the Pelicans still feels like the clubhouse leader. But it was nonetheless still a disaster. After cutting a double digit deficit down to just three points heading into halftime, on the heels of Austin Reaves throwing two fast break passes that made him look like "Hillbilly Magic," the wheels fell the hell off in the third quarter. How bad? Try "four points in the first six minutes" bad. Report: The Lakers Trade Russell Westbrook, Acquire D'Angelo Russell, Malik Beasley and Jarred Vanderbilt: The Lakers looked like a team that might be on the verge of cracking Tuesday in their loss to Oklahoma City. They signed a center (Damian Jones) and two forwards (Juan Toscano-Anderson and Troy Brown Jr.) to veteran's minimum contracts, and used their taxpayer midlevel exception, worth about $6.5 million, on former Spurs guard Lonnie Walker IV. On the one hand, the Lakers broke from last year's free agent trends in significant ways. First, they went much, much younger. The oldest of the quartet is Toscano-Anderson, at 29. On the other, the Lakers didn't pick up any of the shooting they banked last season. Or at least they thought they banked, in hindsight. All told, it reminds Lakers fans of the bind the team is in, trying to make impactful improvements to the roster. Kent Bazemore, Wayne Ellington, and Trevor Ariza have all been ineffective. DeAndre Jordan, too. Kendrick Nunn is yet to play. A bright spot, though, has been the pickup of Stanley Johnson, who has brought badly needed athleticism on the defensive end, and quickly become a favorite of Frank Vogel. Wednesday, the Lakers reached an agreement with Johnson that will keep him around for the rest of the season, and give the Lakers first dibs on his services next year as well. It's a good deal for all involved, and it's not impossible that, stripped of the expectations that come with being a high lottery pick, Johnson, still only 25, could find a niche and develop with the Lakers. Not into a star - that ship has sailed - but as a va Podcast episode

Jaren Jackson Jr. or Anthony Davis?: The Lakers are in a real, live playoff series for the first time in a couple of seasons, and it should be a barnburner! It's the Memphis Grizzlies, who have played quite well all season, save a mid-season lull. It's an intriguing matchup, to say the least. LeBron James and Anthony Davis as established stars, meeting Ja Morant and Jaren Jackson Jr., who are ready to emerge in the next generation of the NBA elite. But what else is going on, here? How are the Grizzlies going to match up against LeBron and A.D.? Is Dillon Brooks the key to the series? What about the Lakers role players? How much will L.A.'s perimeter shooting impact what we're going to see. Can Austin Reaves, Malik Beasley and the rest hit enough shots to force Memphis to play things straight defensively? The ability of either team to do damage in transition could be a huge factor, as neither team is exactly elegant in the half Podcast episode

They're often terrible to the point of generating genuine disgust from the fan base, and then have third quarters like the one against New York on Saturday, where they blitzed the Knicks and Malik Monk outscored the visitors by himself. In those moments, they prod (sucker?) Lakers fans into believing again. So what are they? Because they're not an ordinary .500 team, that's for sure. LeBron came back strong on Saturday, proving again that he's simply indispensable to the Lakers, no matter how hard they try to fix that problem. Anthony Davis was again remarkable, dominating on both sides of the ball as he continues his strong play since returning from injury. The problem? The third star. Russell Westbrook was benched by Frank Vogel for the OT, as much because of his defense than his offense. So what is Westbrook actually capable of on that end? Is he just not willing Podcast episode

Plus, Free Agent Targets!: Earlier this week, the Denver Nuggets and Oklahoma City Thunder made a trade that, frankly, impacted the Lakers more than it will either of those teams. Why? Because the transaction basically made it much harder for the Thunder to acquire Russell Westbrook from the Lakers. Were they going to? Probably not, but given how thin the interest in Westbrook is likely to be, any shrinkage in available options is a thing. So Wednesday's trade sending Christian Wood from Houston to Dallas makes a difference to the Lakers, too, because Wood is one of those guys rumored to have been a possibility to move in a trade for Westbrook. Probably not as likely and therefore not as landscape altering, but another potential option chipped away.
