    Introduction

    ––––––––

Congratulations on purchasing Polyvagal Theory and thank you for doing so.

The following chapters will discuss all of the different parts that you need to know in order to get started with the Polyvagal Theory. This is a theory that has been around for some time, but many people have no idea what it is all about. The neat thing about it, though, is that, once you learn how it works and how the different parts of the body relate, from the muscles to the organs to everything in between, you will be able to make this work for your needs in no time as well.

This guidebook is going to take some time to look more closely at the Polyvagal Theory and what it will entail for us. Specifically, we are going to explore all of the many conditions and other issues that we are able to solve in order to make this work for us as well.

For example, we will explore how using the Polyvagal Theory, and some of the prescribed methods that go with it the right way, can help us to deal with issues like inflammation, stress (both normal and emotional), depression, trauma, anxiety, and so much more. Almost any condition that is going to stimulate a fight or flight response in the body can benefit when we start to work with the Polyvagal Theory, and we will spend some time going through this guidebook and learning exactly how this can happen.

There are so many things to learn about and love when it comes to the Polyvagal Theory, and being able to put it all together and learn how to make this work for our needs is going to be important as well. When you are ready to learn a bit more about the Polyvagal Theory and how it can work for our needs, make sure to check out this guidebook to get started.

There are plenty of books on this subject on the market, thanks again for choosing this one! Every effort was made to ensure it is full of as much useful information as possible, please enjoy it!

Chapter 1: Understanding the Autonomic Nervous System

    ––––––––

Before we are able to get too much into the Polyvagal system, it is important for us to take a quick look at the autonomic nervous system or the ANS. This is going to be the system in the body that is going to take care of the visceral internal organs, including the lungs, stomach, heart, and intestine. It can also take control over a few of the other muscles, including the diaphragm, to help us control our rate of breathing.

The reason that it was given this name is that it is going to function without us consciously controlling it. For example, how often do you really need to think about your breathing (though you can hold your breath and control it a bit), about digesting your food, or about your heartbeat and how that is doing. They are going to happen automatically without you needing to think about it.

Most of the functions in this system are going to engage with two essential reactive systems. These will include the sympathetic nervous system and the parasympathetic nervous system, which we are going to call the ventral vagal response in the Polyvagal Theory. This is going to be the system that is able to stimulate a series of calming responses and will encourage interaction and social interaction. We will explore these in more detail as we go through the process, but for now, we need to go more into our nervous system and look at how it is meant to work.

The Peripheral and Central Nervous Systems

The nervous system is often going to be known as either part of the central system or the peripheral system. We can start with the central part because this is going to be comprised of parts like the brain and the spinal cord. It is central because it is the part that controls all of our bodily functions along the way. Then we have the peripheral nervous system, which is going to be made up of all the nerves that go out of the body and out of the spinal
