The Patriotic Piper - Donald Scoby

I was asked to write the foreword a bit less than a year ago. During that time, many of us have participated in and assisted with ideas in the development of this book. Don has put much of himself and his vision into this work. I have heard some of the songs from this book at a recent parade, it really speaks as to who we are as an organization, people of Scots, Irish or other Celtic Ancestry, who are Americans, and this expresses this with not only the songs of our Ancestors, but our history as Americans.

We are Veterans and the families of Veterans, our heritage and history are extremely important to us, it defines us, shows us where we came from and what we may become. This is what we hoped this book would represent. Don putting the history of the songs in the book shows that this is more than a song collection, but a definitive work of music history, that can stand alone. Our heritage can be seen in music, each Era of our heritage has its own defining music and this showcases this fact.

Our musical roots are in Scotland, Ireland and other Celtic Nations – they have formed the basis of Bluegrass, Country, Rock and even Soul. They tell stories, life, love, rebellion, anger, justice and more, they describe us and connect us. The issue because of this is like Jazz, there are different versions of every song, musicians have their own interpretation of the music, to say something specific and so the various versions come about. With this you must have commonality in bands, or you will have chaos. One purpose of this book is to set up this commonality, so the stories can be told, so that they can be heard and speak to the listeners. It will allow any piper or drummer to play with Scottish-American Military Society Mt. Rainier Post 1889 Band. This is the core of why this has come to be.

    PREFACE

In the Spring of 2018 my friend and co-piper, Victoria, and I identified that we wanted to expand the collection of tunes we play for S.A.M.S. Post 1889 functions. During the preceding years we had developed a handful of music combinations with a focus on military and patriotic music and we wanted more! Having a better supply of bagpipe notation to work from, and possibly a little more spare time in my personal life, I offered to get a start on this task. At first I was only able to work in spurts, however the idea remained in the back of my mind – then in July it all came to a head …

An idea had developed while I reviewed tunes, looking into their histories to support my selection. Instead of just picking pieces and making a stack of sheet music which Victoria and I would work from, it had the potential to be much more. These military and patriotic themed tunes could be made into a book featuring the history of each composition. This book would have the ability to serve as a music collection and tune history primer for pipers in other S.A.M.S. Camps and Posts along with military-minded pipers elsewhere in the world. A book such as this could help to further awareness of our organization, show who we are as members of Post 1889, and contribute to the ongoing development of S.A.M.S. as a whole.

During the Summer at the 2019 Annual General Meeting, I presented my idea to Post 1889. I wanted the go-ahead that this project would be officially sanctioned by the Post. This was met with support across the board! I was humbled and inspired at enthusiasm my brother and sister Post members had for this idea. In the days and weeks that followed, members of Post 1889 asked me questions about the project and let me know how excited they too were about it. This opened the opportunity to bring members in on the endeavour who were willing and interested in making contributions.

The Patriotic Piper has become the effort of many members of Post 1889 and I am honoured to say that this book is about us!
