Excellent feature on modding in issue 449! Like many of us, I’ve tinkered with every guitar I’ve ever owned to some extent – whether it’s just the pots and pickguard or maybe replacing that bridge humbucker for one with a little extra stink.

Recently, I decided to take the plunge with an unloved Squier Standard Strat I’ve had for donkeys’ years – and never really used as much as it deserved. I kept it because there was something about the sound and resonance from the body that hinted it had more to give – even though it was not to my taste in terms of the generic-feeling neck, dull pickups, etc.

So, wallet out, toolbox out, here we go. I sanded down the sunburst body, refinished that in black, fitted a new pickguard, new Wilkinson bridge humbucker, an old P-90 from the toolbox in the neck, new roller-bridge saddles
