Chapter 1
Knox,
Lance, his boss, called out. Knox Stallard almost didn’t stop. It was three days before Christmas and once again time for his annual solitary hike to a cabin in the middle of nowhere for some relaxation. But he knew that tone. He was about to be asked for a favor.
I’m out of here until the new year,
Knox said, giving his boss a small salute.
Lance trusted him with the hardest cases, longest assignments, and his own life at one point. He never interfered with Knox’s time off, though, which was why he was intrigued despite being a little bit annoyed.
Lance and he had done ten years in the military before exiting after a rather bumpy operation that left them both facing years of rehab. During his time healing, Lance started his private security firm for U.S. clients and the occasional one abroad. When Knox had finally been in a position to need employment, Lance had come knocking. That was five years ago, and their agreement was ten days each year he would be allowed to sculk off to his cabin in the woods.
Lance lost his parents and younger brother Christmas Eve in a bad accident the year before he enlisted. Even though Lance was trained to hide his emotions, this time of year was a tough pill to swallow. Wallowing in his grief on his own was his ode to the only family besides his brothers in arms he ever intended to have.
Inhaling, Knox backed up until he could see Lance’s face through the open doorway. His heart stuttered to a stop when he saw the tall form of the second man in the room. Dropping his bag in the hall, he walked forward and welcomed the newcomer with a stiff shake.
Mitchell, what brings a spook like you around our humble offices?
Know asked. He recognized the man from several military briefings in his time enlisted. Mitchell Grant worked for an agency with initials that normally didn’t operate on U.S. soil. It was a bit of a surprise to find him here. Knox was curious— not willing to help, mind you—but interested in whatever the backstory was that brought him in.
Knox, I informed Mitchell here that you never work two days before Christmas until the New Year. Secondly, you are never asked to protect a woman or children.
Wow, so you’re here about a favor that would break both my rules,
he said, quirking a brow at Mitchell and his gaze. A child or a woman?
Woman,
Mitchell said,
