    Chapter 1

Nina glanced at her watch, giving Parker a look that told her it was time to wrap up the interview. Luckily, Nina had been on her team long enough that she understood the silent message fully. Within three minutes, the candidate for the new developer role was walking out the door leaving Parker eight minutes to discuss the interview with Nina and be on her way to the next commitment. Time management was one of her strengths, and despite the many pulls on her time, she was a stickler for remaining on schedule and not making people wait.

What did you think? Nina turned to her excitedly. He has a great education, seems hungry and ready to jump right in. I thought he was amazing.

Yes, I know you did, Parker replied, causing Nina’s face to flush a bright crimson.

Name the last great developer on our team that didn’t retreat into code when I walk into the room. Or one that you have met, ever, that dry cleans and presses their clothes?

Nina scrunched her nose. I see your point.

All talk and nothing to back it, Parker replied, handing over the resume. Please line up the three I asked for in tomorrow’s schedule, and then we will just need to make one of them work. We are going to be three solid weeks behind soon and just need another set of fast typing brilliant hands.

How about mine? Nina asked with a look of anticipation.

Parker honed in on her face, with curiosity. I didn’t know you were interested in leaving your assistant role?

I’ve been taking coding classes at night and even had two of the guys schooling me on the current project, she said.

Okay, switch the hunt to an assistant, and I’m willing to give you a shot, she said without hesitation, impressed by her initiative. She believed loyalty was honed through the promotion of internal staff when roles opened. Nina was a hard worker, great time management, and earned her stripes through copious amounts of overtime. If she wanted to be given a shot at a developer role, Parker was willing to grant it.

Thank you, Nina said, launching from her chair and wrapping
