About this ebook

I suffered the worst thing a mother could live through the night my son died in an accidental drowning.
My marriage is hanging on by a thread, and I pray that this decrepit old Inn on the shores of Florida is the second chance we need to save my family.
Unfortunately, the more I engage with the community and start rebuilding, the more suspect my husband's activities become.
I'm beginning to wonder about the wisdom of this move to Waverly Shores, but soon the best news takes my breath away as the page turns on a new chapter.
Will these new blessings be a fresh start for my husband and me, or is my family's legacy about to take an eerie turn?

    Chapter 1

I stood staring at the impossibly small casket, trying to make sense of the craziness that was my new life. I had once thought I had everything going for myself, yet in the blink of an eye, all my dreams for the future were lying in a wooden box, soon to be lowered into the ground. My son had drowned when my sweet hubby, Leonard, had turned his back for a second on a father-and-son outing while I had been shopping with friends.

Shopping seemed such a stupid excuse now for why I wasn’t there when my son took his last breath. I knew, logically, it was not my fault, but I hadn’t been there that afternoon which left those thoughts to creep in and worry that maybe I could have done something to plague every waking moment since that terrible phone call. Maybe with two sets of eyes, we would have seen something that just one person would miss. Unfortunately, I would never know the answer to that question, so all I could do was celebrate my sweet son, Theo, as best I could and try to find a way forward.

The day passed in a blur as people filed past me and the coffin to pay respects. I hoped that my responses were appropriate because I couldn’t get my mind to function fully. I didn’t want to play this part today but curl up on the ground next to the coffin and never leave. I couldn’t fathom moving to the next stage of life without my baby boy, and nothing that anyone said, no matter how well-intentioned, could change it. After an eternity of chatting with others, it was finally just Leonard and myself left beside our son as the staff lowered him into the cold ground.

I’ve put the house on the market, Leonard said, capturing my attention as the proclamation came out of thin air. We are returning to Waverly Shores and taking on the Inn I inherited when my mother passed. I know we talked about it a while back, and now seems as good a time as ever.

I just turned to stare at him for a moment. I couldn’t quite fathom why he would be telling me this right now as I stood reeling from the events of this traumatic day. I knew that he had been struggling since this horrible thing started, but the timing of this huge upheaval was problematic.

Can we please give it a few days or a week to make this move? I asked as I inhaled, hoping to
