About this ebook

Many people believe that there is a God but have great difficulty accepting that there is a devil, even though they see good and evil in this world. This struggle between good and evil is borne out in the lives of people. Throughout his medical practice, Dr. Josiah Rambally has seen and dealt with some of the most forceful manifestations of this struggle.

This book is a collection of Dr. Rambally's first-hand accounts, which undeniably show that Satan is actively seeking to destroy people's lives, and, more importantly, that Jesus Christ's victory is only a pray away. Beyond Medicine 2: Unveiling Spiritual Warfare Between Christ and Satan in Medical Practice is a medical doctor's spiritual odyssey that will leave you astonished and inspired.

    About the Author

Josiah Rambally was born in the Caribbean island of St. Lucia. His grandparents were from India. After he completed his primary school education at the L’abayee Seventh-day Adventist School in St. Lucia, he took his secondary school (high school) in London, England.

Subsequently, Rambally completed his premedical degree at the University of Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada. His medical degree spanned Universidad Autónoma de Guadalajara (Zapopan, Mexico), Clínica Anglo Americana Private Clinic (Lima, Peru), with his final year of medicine completed at the University of Manitoba School of Medicine (Winnipeg, Manitoba). His medical internship was done at the San Fernando General Hospital in Trinidad and Tobago. Dr. Rambally then had the choice to work in four different countries: Mexico, Trinidad, St. Lucia, and the United States (he did pass the US medical examination for foreign medical graduates).

The Lord led Dr. Rambally to choose to work in the country of his birth, St. Lucia. Later, he completed a master’s degree in public health at Loma Linda University in California. In St. Lucia he worked in the following health-care areas: primary health care, including being the prison doctor; registrar at the psychiatric hospital; acting consultant psychiatrist, senior medical officer, and performing autopsies at the Victoria Hospital, which is the main hospital on the island.

Dr. Rambally was the former chief medical officer of St. Lucia and a designated medical practitioner for Canada in St. Lucia. He also obtained an award in medicine from the Medical and Dental Association of St. Lucia, handed to him by the Governor General. He wrote one chapter on demonic possession in Health Smart: A Rational No-Nonsense Approach to Health: A Collection of Works From More Than 30 Professionals, by Walter C. Thompson. After that book was published, the chapter written by Dr. Rambally was put in Spirit Daily, which is said to be the most widely read Catholic website.

Rambally used the media extensively to educate the public on health topics in both English and St. Lucian French Creole, Kwéyòl (Patois). In collaboration with the Roman Catholic Church and the government of St. Lucia, he provided voluntary services to some Catholic institutions such as The Marian Home for the Elderly, St. Lucy’s Home and Cornerstone House (homes for the homeless), and Mother Teresa Home.

In collaboration with the Seventh-day Adventist Church, Dr. Rambally provided free medical services to all the non-ambulatory patients in various areas of St. Lucia. He is an international lay evangelist and has preached in various countries around the world: Chile, Colombia, Lesotho, Swaziland, and South Africa. In the Caribbean: St. Vincent, St. Croix, Antigua, and the Dominican Republic. He conducted evangelistic meetings in the following countries: St. Lucia (15) including as televangelist; Jamaica, Dominica; United States (New York); Mexico; Guyana; and United Kingdom (London). As a result, churches have been planted in London, U.K.; Guyana; Mexico; and St. Lucia. Rambally and his wife went on a mission trip with Seeds of Hope to Lesotho, Swaziland, and South Africa, where he took care of patients and also preached.

    Foreword

Most people believe there is a God, but many people have great difficulty accepting that there is a devil, even though they see both good and evil in this world.

The struggle between good and evil manifests in the lives of people. God is love, and the death of Jesus on Calvary’s cross has given us the assurance that the devil is a defeated foe. You will discover in this book that humanity’s extremities are God’s opportunities.

Every fraction of a second of our existence, we depend totally on the care and love of God. We cannot know or predict the situations we will encounter at any point in our lives, but we should always be aware who is in control of our lives. The experiences and circumstances expressed in this book are meant as lessons for all of us. As you read this book, may you find it a source of encouragement to face the challenges of life as you continue to depend on God. The name of Jesus will be exalted, and Satan and his deceptions will be exposed.

    Introduction

He who does not love does not know God for God is love (1 John 4:8). I will make the Apostle’s confession my own. I know that in me (that is, in my flesh) dwelleth no good thing (Romans 7:18). God forbid that I should glory, save in the cross of our Lord Jesus Christ, by whom the world is crucified unto me, and I unto the world (Galatians 6:14). I am a sinner saved by grace.

Only the power of God can cause the earth to rotate, and we see the sun (which releases energy at a mass–energy conversion rate of 4.26 million metric tons per second) rise and set. Only God is capable of providing free oxygen in the atmosphere, putting all the nutrients in the food (a handful of soil contains in excess of 500 species of fungi and 100 billion individual species of bacteria), and giving us water. And He made each one of us, taking us from two cells to approximately 37.2 trillion cells.

During my rotation in internal medicine at the Health Sciences Centre at Winnipeg General Hospital in Manitoba, Canada, I witnessed something remarkable. During the ward round, the consultant said, We did all the tests on this lady, and all the tests came out normal. She is dying, and we don’t know why. The lady died. At that time, I thought science had the last word, and I didn’t ask the lady if she would like me to pray for her before she passed away.

When I did my rotation at the Clínica Anglo Americana Private Clinic (a.k.a. Anglo-American Hospital) in Lima, Peru, I visited the city, and someone pointed to a three-storey house with broken glass and said it was haunted and that no one could sleep in that house. I said, I can sleep there. I will not say that again, except to try to help someone in distress, by the grace of God.

We are all on death row, but God’s love, which is beyond our comprehension, has made provision through Jesus so that we can have eternal life by accepting Jesus as our Saviour and Lord, so we can escape eternal death. There are people who say there is no God because they have not seen Him, yet they believe that the forces of gravity with an acceleration of 9.8 metres per second squared, and the wind that they have never seen, exist. There are so many good things taking place on earth, and we need to thank God for all His blessings. But there are so many unpleasant things taking place in this world, indicating that evil forces must be present.

There is a cosmic conflict going on behind the scenes of human history. This book depicts some of the struggles between good and evil, and we are in the midst of it all. We do have a choice—namely, to decide whom to follow, Jesus or Satan. Chapter 1 (Who Is Jesus?) and Chapter 2 (Who Is Satan?) will shed light on the stories and examples in the book that cannot be explained either logically or scientifically.

Right now, millions of individuals are negatively impacted by evil forces. Many people have joined religious groups, the entertainment industry, or other organizations to build fame, wealth, or protection; and many are reading books that appear innocent but are based on Satanic ideologies that lead people straight into the devil’s trap. It is relatively easy to join the ranks of Satan, but when you want to leave or break free, it is a struggle.

What people are searching for is lasting happiness and peace. Unless they look to Jesus Christ, they will never find what they are searching for, because it is beyond this world. Their deepest needs can only be met in Him.

I met a gentleman who had been branded with a symbol of an organization that belongs to Satan. His wife told me the following: We were at a friend’s house, and my husband said that we had to go immediately. He started to drive very fast while holding my hands very tightly. When he stopped, I managed to run out of the car to a restaurant. He ran after me and grabbed me and attempted to have intercourse with me in public. The police were called, and they picked him up, but he had no recollection of what he had done in public. I come to you for help.

I took the man’s history. He had originally come from overseas but was now living in Canada. He joined the Masonic Lodge at the age of 30 and remained in it for 10 years. He was the treasurer and became the second-highest in rank. He said that it was a difficult process to join the Lodge. He was not required to produce a police report. During the initiation, a rope was placed around his neck, and he had to walk blindfolded for about 20 to 30 minutes. He was then touched on his back and on his sides and given light hits and slaps. For a handshake, he used his right hand and pushed his thumb in the knuckle of the index finger. He had taken an oath, but he couldn’t remember it. He saw a shadow following him, and the hairs on his head stood on end. A voice was saying to him, Say it and Go to the distant. He also took the smell of decaying animals, but he did not tell his wife about it. When he was at a friend’s house, he felt that his body was heavy, and he felt the presence. He did not know that he would be branded.

I advised her to take her husband to a plastic surgeon to remove the satanic symbol on his chest. The last I heard of him is that the symbol had not been removed. I lost contact with this couple.

And when he had called unto him his twelve disciples, he gave them power against unclean spirits, to cast them out, and to heal all manner of sickness and all manner of disease (Matthew 10:1). Satan does have power, but in Greek it is dunamis, in contrast to exousia, which is the authority given by Jesus to his followers. The objective of this book is not to glorify or magnify Satan, but to exalt the name of Jesus and expose the devil and his evil angels—because Satan can be disabled by revealing his true wicked character.

Satan works behind the scenes. Organizations and individuals are blamed for the evil done in this world. But on one occasion, Jesus turned and said to Peter, Get thee behind me Satan: thou art an offence to me: for thou savourest not the thing that be of God, but those that be of men (Matthew 16:23). We all know that Peter was a disciple of Jesus and he was not Satan. According to Mark 8:33, when Jesus said this, He turned away from Peter and was facing the other disciples. Jesus was addressing the unseen foe (Satan), who had prompted Peter’s utterings.

Jesus used the same words when He resisted and rebuked the tempter in the wilderness. The command means get away from mego away or get out of sight. Peter had allowed the gates of hell to prevail upon him, and in that instance, he had become the mouthpiece of the prince of evil.

There is violence and murder in this world just because of words that, once spoken, offended another person and led to broken relationships, marriages, friendships, and families. A soft answer turneth away wrath: but grievous words stir up anger (Proverbs 15:1). Instead of distancing yourself, harming the person, or even taking the life of the person who spread lies or gossiped about you, why not get down on your knees and pray for that person? Perhaps this person didn’t even go behind your back in the first place and the report that came to you was a rumour in itself. Could it be that Satan is using that person to get to you? Rebuke the devil in Jesus’ name and do not leave your spouse, families, church members, and friends in shambles.

The thief cometh not, but for to steal, and to kill, and to destroy: I am come that they might have life, and that they might have it more abundantly (John 10:10). When the devil possesses someone, he does not just come to say hello; he comes to destroy that person. On one occasion, I was just on time to prevent a demon-possessed person from throwing herself down a two-storey house to the concrete below. A demon-possessed person is disoriented with respect to time, place, and the self.

Some may wonder why the devil is able to repossess someone after he is cast out. Remember that not all cases of demonic possession have the same causes or reasons, and the devil is far more experienced than we are. Mary of Bethany, one of Lazarus’s sisters, was delivered from demons seven times by Christ.

    CHAPTER 1

    Who Is Jesus?

For God so loved the world, that he gave his

only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him

should not perish, but have everlasting life.

    —John 3:16

And God saw every thing that he had made, and,

behold, it was very good. And the evening and the

    morning were the sixth day.

    —Genesis 1:31

Jesus came on a rescue mission to suffer and die to save those who would willingly accept Him as Lord and Saviour. God suffered with Jesus, and the heavenly angels were sad.

In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. The same was in the beginning with God. All things were made by him; and without him was not anything made that was made (John 1:1). The him in this text refers to Jesus. He was at the beginning with God. He is the God who created everything.

For the wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord (Romans 6:23).

The first promise made in the Bible of a coming Messiah who will save His people and destroy both Satan and his angelic and human followers is found in Genesis 3:15: And I will put enmity between thee [Satan], and the woman [the church], and between thy seed and her seed; it shall bruise thy head, and thou shalt bruise his heel. What does this mean? From the time the promise of a coming Messiah was given by God to rescue humankind, the devil tried his very best to destroy that seed, beginning with the incident when Satan caused Cain to kill Abel. The devil bruised Christ’s heel at the cross of Calvary, but Jesus will give Satan the final blow on his head at the end of this world’s history. Jesus has broken the powers of the devil on the cross of Calvary, so we do have the assurance of complete victory in Jesus.

Jesus is our Creator, our sustainer, our pattern, our helper, our friend, and our soon coming Saviour who will put an end to all our troubles. To those who have accepted Him as their personal Saviour, He will give eternal life where there will be no more demons; no pain, suffering, or death; but bliss for evermore.

Jesus is with us in both adversity and prosperity. When the devil wants to incite you to sin; wants to torment you, your family, or your friends; cause the destruction of your property; or inflict mental and physical illness, there is One who is stronger than him—and that one is no other but Jesus Christ. As you continue to read, you will see that there is power in the name and blood of Jesus, and this power can make the devil tremble.

And what is the exceeding greatness of his power to us-ward who believe, according to the working of his mighty power, which he wrought in Christ, when he raised him from the dead, and set him at his own right hand in the heavenly places, far above all principality, and power, and might, and dominion, and every name that is named, not only in this world, but also in that which is to come: And hath put all things under his feet, and gave him to be the head over all things to the church, which is his body, the fulness of him that filleth all in all. (Ephesians 1:19–23)

Wherefore God also hath highly exalted him, and given him a name which is above every name: That at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, of things in heaven, and things in earth, and things under the earth; And that every tongue should confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father. (Philippians 2:9–11)

Remember that the name of Jesus is the highest, most powerful, and most beautiful name in the universe. Jesus is the sweetest name I know. If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness (1 John 1:9).

Call on Jesus today confess your sins, and the blood of Jesus will wash your sins whiter than snow and prepare you to live with Him throughout all eternity.

    CHAPTER 2

Who Is Satan? (The Devil’s Work, Origin, and Destruction)

For we wrestle not against flesh and blood,

but against principalities, powers, against the rulers

of the darkness of this world, against spiritual

    wickedness in high places.

    —Ephesians 6:12

Be sober, be vigilant; because your adversary

the devil, as a roaring lion, walketh about,

    seeking whom he may devour

    —1 Peter 5:8

We cannot use physical or tangible weapons (like guns or bombs) to fight Satan, because we cannot see him—even when he is right next to us—and because he is not bound by the physical world. Satan resists even God’s holy angels, much less humans.

Then said he unto me, Fear not, Daniel: for from the first day that thou didst set thine heart to understand, and to chasten thyself before thy God, thy words were heard, and I am come for thy words. But the prince of the kingdom of Persia withstood me one and twenty days: but, lo, Michael, one of the chief princes, came to help me; and I remained there with the kings of Persia. (Daniel 10:12–13)

We get glimpses of the conflict between the powers of good and evil. The angel Gabriel wrestled for 21 days with the evil forces that were seeking control over the mind of Cyrus. He needed reinforcement, and Jesus came to help Gabriel, and the evil forces failed. Jesus got the victory. You will see that in the struggle against evil forces, we often need reinforcement from prayer warriors and God’s holy angels.

We also see that the evil angels are working with world leaders to hinder God’s work on earth. Only in Satan’s government do we find a power that compels and coerces. In contrast, God uses goodness, love, and mercy. We are dealing with an experienced, sleepless, cruel, unseen, unhappy, furious, deceitful, hateful enemy (Satan) who is full of anxiety. He seeks to intercept the path of the Christian every moment, so we have to be alert at all times. He rejoices when we are in distress and when we are suffering, he causes sickness and death, and he can make people sick and subsequently heal them. He is the one who sowed tares [weeds] among the wheat (Matthew 13:25).

God overrules the devices of the enemy for the good of those who put their trust in Him. And we know that all things work together for good to them that love God, to them who are the called according to his purpose (Romans 8:28). Jesus
